언제들어도 신비로운 전설속의 인물들이 되어버린 비틀즈는 틴 에이지시절에 퀴리멘(Quarrymen)이라는 트리오(존-폴-조지)로 출발했다. 1950년대 말에는 피트 베스트(드럼)와 스튜어트 서트클리프(리듬 기타)를 맞아들이면서 밴드명을 조니와 문독스로 바꾸어 5인조의 진용을 갖추었다. 이들이 비틀즈의 전신인 실버 비틀즈로 다시 이름을 개명한 것은 1960년이었다. 당시 영국 밴드들의 전진기지였던 독일의 함부르크에서 명성을 날리던 록 싱어 토니 셰리던의 백업 밴드로 실버 비틀즈는 출범했다. 비록 보잘 것 없는 백 코러스나 반주로 참여했지만 이렇게 해서 실버 비틀즈는 토니 셰리던과 함께 공식적인 첫 싱글 <나의 보니>를 1960년대에 발표하기에 이르렀다. 당시의 진귀한 트랙들은 비틀즈가 스타덤에 오른 후인 65년에 독일의 폴리돌 음반사가 발매한 셀프 타이틀의 편집 앨범을 통해 노출되었다. 대부분이 토니 셰리던의 리드 보컬에 가리워져 비틀즈의 진면목을 찾아낼 수 없지만 역사를 더듬어 보는 데엔 진귀한 앨범이 아닐 수 없다. 특히 <달콤한 그녀>에서는 존의 리드 보컬을, <그림자의 외침>에서는 조지의(당시 17세)의 탁월한 리드 기타를 들을 수 있다. 61년으로 접어들며 토니 셰리던의 백업 밴드에 염증을 느낀 열정적 성격의 스튜어트 서트클리프가 실버 비틀즈를 떠났다. 그는 이듬해인 1962.4월.10일에 뇌출혈로 꽃다운 나이에 목숨을 잃고 만다.
61년 2월에 리버플로 돌아온 실버 비틀즈는 캐번 클럽에 고정출연하던중 음반 가게를 운영하던 브라이언엡스타인에게 재능을 인정받았고, 그는 곧 매니저가 되어주었다. 브라이언 엡스타인의 노력으로 실버 비틀즈는 EMI음반사의 오디션에 통과하게 되는데, 당시 오디션을 담당했던 프로듀서 조지 마틴은 드럼 연주가 마음에 들지 않는다는 것을 문제점으로 지적했다. 그래서 피트 베스트는 눈물을 머금고 떠나야했고, 그의 빈자리를 링고가 메꾸게 되었다. 링고는 로리 스톰과 허리케인즈라는 밴드의 일원으로 함부르크에서 활동할 때 실버 비틀즈와 가깝게 지내던 사이였다.

로 짜여진 최종 라인업은 그제야 비틀즈(The Beatles)로 밴드명을 확정짓고 프로듀서 조지 마틴의 지휘아래 만 1년여의 피나는 연습을 시작했다. Love Me Do와 63년 1월에 발표한 두번째 싱글 Please Please Me, 그리고 동년 4월에 발표한 영국시장 데뷔 앨범등으로 비틀즈는 단숨에 유럽을 점령하게 되었다. 싱글 Please Please Me와 데뷔 앨범이 싱글과 앨범차트를 석권(영국 차트에서 동시1위) 하면서 비틀즈의 열기는 미국으로 진출하기 시작했다. 미국땅에 가장먼저 상륙한 비틀즈의 곡은 세번째 싱글인I want to hold your hand였다. 이 곡은 1964.1.18일자 빌보드 핫100 싱글 차트 1위를 기록했으며,뒤이어 이곡이 담긴 세계시장 데뷔 앨범 Meet The Beatles는 2월 1일자 앨범 차트 1위를 기록하는 센세이션을 불러 일으켰다. 비틀즈 최초의 전미순회공연은 64년 2월에 개시되었다. 가는 곳마다 문전성시를 이뤘음은 물론이고, 주요 매스컴의 헤드라인을 독점했다. Meet The Beatles의 폭발적 인기로 비틀즈는 채 3개월이 못되어 2집 The Beatles' Second Album을 발표하는 놀라운 창작력을 발휘하기 시작했다. 이 앨범과 수록곡 She Loves You가 역시 동시에 앨범과 싱글 차트 1위에 기록했다.
비틀즈는 전미순회공연의 벅찬스케줄 속에서도 영화 "A hard day's night"을 촬영했다. 이 영화의 사운드트랙은 64년 6월 3집으로 영화와 함께 발표되었다. 그 사이에 이미 영국에서 싱글로 발표되어 1위를 기록한 Can't Buy Me Love와 데뷔 곡 Love me do가 지각 수입되어 각각 싱글 차트 1위를 기록했다. 이어서 "A hard day's night"이 5번째로 1위를 기록한 때는 64년 7월 18일이었다. Something New을 포함 무려 6매의 앨범이 쏟아진 64년1-3집을 불과 반년만에 발표하여 모두 앨범 차트 1위를기록하는 불가사의를 이뤄낸 비틀즈는 64년 7월 4집 Something New을 발표했다. 앨범 차트 2위를 기록한 4집엔 I want to hold your hand의독일어 버젼을 비롯하여, She Loves You와 <사랑에 빠진다면> 등의 주옥같은 발라드가 수록되었다. 64년 11월에는 「비틀즈 스토리」(The Beatles Story)라는 타이틀의 5집이 발표됐다. 앨범 차트 7위를 기록한 5집은 극성 팬들을 위해 히트곡들은 물론 인터뷰와 사진 등을 엮은 더블 앨범으로 선보였다. 그로부터 불과 한달 후에 앨범 차트 네번째 1위를 기록한 6집 「비틀즈 '65」가 6번째 1위 싱글 I feel fine를 수록하고 발표되었다. 이외에 6집에는 <태양을 따르리>, <월광선생>, <로큰롤 뮤직>, <그녀는 진정 여인>등 우리귀에도 익숙한 곡으로 가득하다.
이로써 비틀즈는 세계시장에 데뷔한 64년 한해에 무려 6매의 앨범을 발표하여 6연속 골드 앨범과 4매의 1위 앨범, 6곡의 1위 히트곡과 4곡의 골드싱글 I Want To Hold Your Hand,Can't Buy Me Love,A Hard Day's Night,I Feel Fine을 기록하는 불가사의를 이뤄냈다.
64년 말에 발표된 「비틀즈 '65」는 이듬해를 겨냥한 앨범 타이틀이었다. 65년 3월엔 7집으로 초기 곡들을 모은 (The Early Beatles)를 발표, 앨범 차트 43위를 기록했다. 동년 6월엔 8집「비틀즈 VI」가 을 수록하고 발표되었다. 앨범 타이틀이 통산 8번째였음에도 불구하고 라는 순서를 부여한 이유는 고단한날의밤과 초기비틀즈를 이 레귤러 앨범으로 간주하고 있기 때문이다. <비틀즈 VI>에는 이들에게 결정적인 영향을 준 로큰롤의 천재 버디 홀리의 고전 <사랑의 밀어>가 곱게 채색되어 있으며, 마이크 스톨러의 곡인 로커빌리의 고전 <캔사스 시티>라든가 역시 비틀즈에게 영향을 준 1950년대의 스타 래리 윌리엄스의 대표곡 두곡 등이 포함되었다. 이처럼 리메이크와 오리지널이 절반씩 섞인 「비틀즈 VI」에서, 존과 폴이 주도해오던 작곡솜씨를 거들은 조지의 <당신은 너무도 날 .... ....

1. 배경지식 하나 없으면서 재즈 듣기를 계속하고 있다. 유명한 블루노트 앨범들 위주로 들어보고 있는데 요즘은 캐넌볼 애덜리랑 소니 클락 듣고 있음. 듣는 동안만큼은 답답한 독서실 구석이 산들바람 부는 동산이 되는 듯한 느낌이다. 며칠전에 한국에서만 발매된다는 블루노트 70주년 기념 박스셋이 나온걸 보고 굉장히 사고 싶었는데 고민할 것도 없는게 돈이 없으므로 포기. 2. Jinbo 새 앨범 Afterwork도 진짜 열심히 계속 듣고 있다. 주변에 음.....
할인 행사 기간에 저렴하게 구입한 비틀즈 노란잠수함 세트. 보호 플라스틱 가장 자리를 살짝 칼로 도려내고, 그 안으로 손을 집어 넣어 고정되어 있는 끈들을 풀고 조심스럽게 꺼내면 된다. made in china... 하지만 가격에 비해 완성도는 그리 나쁘지 않다. DVD 장식장 한 구석을 차지하고 있는 귀여운 녀석들. 칸마다 2세트씩 적당히 들어간다....
