How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man? Isn't how many seas must a white dove sail Before she sleeps in the sand? Isn't how many times must the cannon balls fly Before they're forever banned? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. Isn't how many years can a mountain exist Before it is washed to the sea? Isn't how many years can some people exist Before they're allowed to be free? Isn't how many times can a man turn his head And pretend that he just doesn't see? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. Isn't how many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky? Isn't how many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? Isn't how many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died? The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind, The answer is blowin' in the wind. |

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam And admit that the waters Around you have grown And accept it that soon You'll be drenched to the bone. If your time to you Is worth savin' Then you better start swimmin' Or you'll sink like a stone For the times they are a-changin'. Come writers and critics Who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide The chance won't come again And don't speak too soon For the wheel's still in spin And there's no tellin' who That it's namin'. For the loser now Will be later to win For the times they are a-changin'. Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's a battle outside And it is ragin'. It'll soon shake your windows And rattle your walls For the times they are a-changin'. Come mothers and fathers Throughout the land And don't criticize What you can't understand Your sons and your daughters Are beyond your command Your old road is Rapidly agin'. Please get out of the new one If you can't lend your hand For the times they are a-changin'. The line it is drawn The curse it is cast The slow one now Will later be fast As the present now Will later be past The order is Rapidly fadin'. And the first one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'. |

It ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It don't matter, anyhow An' it ain't no use to sit and wonder why, babe If you don't know by now When your rooster crows at the break of dawn Look out your window and I'll be gone You're the reason I'm trav'lin' on Don't think twice, it's all right It ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe That light I never knowed An' it ain't no use in turnin' on your light, babe I'm on the dark side of the road Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say To try and make me change my mind and stay We never did too much talkin' anyway So don't think twice, it's all right It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal Like you never did before It ain't no use in callin' out my name, gal I can't hear you any more I'm a-thinkin' and a-wond'rin' all the way down the road I once loved a woman, a child I'm told I give her my heart but she wanted my soul But don't think twice, it's all right I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road, babe Where I'm bound, I can't tell But goodbye's too good a word, gal So I'll just say fare thee well I ain't sayin' you treated me unkind You could have done better but I don't mind You just kinda wasted my precious time But don't think twice, it's all right |

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand, Vanished from my hand, Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping. My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet, I have no one to meet And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship, My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip, My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels To be wanderin'. I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun, It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run And but for the sky there are no fences facin'. And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind, I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're Seein' that he's chasing. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind, Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves, The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach, Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow. Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free, Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands, With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves, Let me forget about today until tomorrow. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you. |

Once upon a time you dressed so fine.
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, Didn't you? People'd call, say, "Beware doll, You're bound to fall." You thought they were all Kiddin' you. You used to laugh about Everybody that was hangin' out. Now you don't talk so loud. Now you don't seem so proud About having to be scrounging Your next meal. How does it feel? How does it feel To be without a home Like a complete unknown; Like a rolling stone? Ah, you've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely, but you know you only used to get Juiced in it. Nobody's ever taught you how to live out on the street And now you're gonna have to get Used to it. You say you'd never compromise With the mystery tramp, but now you realize He's not selling any alibis As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes And say, "Do you want to make a deal?" How does it feel? How does it feel To be on your own With no direction home A complete unknown; Like a rolling stone? Ah, you never turned around to see the frowns On the jugglers and the clowns when they all did Tricks for you. You never understood that it ain't no good. You shouldn't let other people get your Kicks for you. You used to ride on a chrome horse with your diplomat Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat. Ain't it hard when you discover that He really wasn't where it's at After he took from you everything he could steal. How does it feel? How does it feel To, ha, be on your own? No direction home Like a complete unknown; Like a rolling stone. Ah, Princess in the steeple and all the pretty people; They're all drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made; Exchangin' all 'precious gifts. You'd better take your diamond ring. You'd better pawn it, babe. You used to be so amused at Napoleon in rags And the language that he used. Go to him now. He calls you. You can't refuse. When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose. You're invisible now. You got no secrets to conceal. How does it feel? Ah, how does it feel To be on your own With no direction home Like a complete unknown; Like a rolling stone? |

Nobody feels any pain
Tonight as I stand inside the rain Ev'rybody knows That Baby's got new clothes But lately I see her ribbons and her bows Have fallen from her curls. She takes just like a woman, yes, she does She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does And she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl. Queen Mary, she's my friend Yes, I believe I'll go see her again Nobody has to guess That Baby can't be blessed Till she sees finally that she's like all the rest With her fog, her amphetamine and her pearls. She takes just like a woman, yes, she does She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does And she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl. It was raining from the first And I was dying there of thirst So I came in here And your long-time curse hurts But what's worse Is this pain in here I can't stay in here Ain't it clear that? I just can't fit Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit When we meet again Introduced as friends Please don't let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world. Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do You make love just like a woman, yes, you do Then you ache just like a woman But you break just like a little girl. |

"There must be some way out of here," said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief. Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth, None of them along the line know what any of it is worth." "No reason to get excited," the thief, he kindly spoke, "There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke. But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate, So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late." All along the watchtower, princes kept the view While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too. Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl, Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl. |

Lay, lady, lay.
Lay across my big brass bed. Lay, lady, lay. Lay across my big brass bed. Whatever colors you have in your mind, I'll show them to you and you'll see them shine. Lay, lady, lay. Lay across my big brass bed. Stay, lady, stay. Stay with your man awhile. Until the break of day, Let me see you make him smile. His clothes are dirty but his, his hands are clean And you're the best thing that he's ever seen. Stay, lady, stay. Stay with your man awhile. Why wait any longer for the world to begin? You can have your cake and eat it too. Why wait any longer for the one you love When he's standing in front of you? Lay, lady, lay. Lay across my big brass bed. Stay, lady, stay. Stay while the night is still ahead. I long to see you in the morning light. I long to reach for you in the night. Stay, lady, stay. |

They say ev'rything can be replaced,
Yet ev'ry distance is not near. So I remember ev'ry face Of ev'ry man who put me here. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. They say ev'ry man needs protection, They say ev'ry man must fall. Yet I swear I see my reflection Some place so high above this wall. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. Standing next to me in this lonely crowd, Is a man who swears he's not to blame. All day long I hear him shout so loud, Crying out that he was framed. I see my light come shining From the west unto the east. Any day now, any day now, I shall be released. |

If not for you,
Babe, I couldn't find the door, Couldn't even see the floor, I'd be sad and blue, If not for you. If not for you, Babe, I'd lay awake all night, Wait for the mornin' light To shine in through, But it would not be new, If not for you. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, I'd be lost if not for you, And you know it's true. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, Oh! what would I do If not for you. If not for you, Winter would have no spring, Couldn't hear the robin sing, I just wouldn't have a clue, Anyway it wouldn't ring true, If not for you. |

Ooh..
Ooh.. Ooh.. Mama, take this badge off of me. I can't use it anymore. It's gettin' dark, too dark to see. I feel I'm knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Mama, put my guns in the ground. I can't shoot them anymore. That long black cloud is comin' down. I feel I'm knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Knock, knock, knockin' on Heaven's door. Ooh.. |

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true, May you always do for others And let others do for you. May you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rung, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. May you grow up to be righteous, May you grow up to be true, May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you. May you always be courageous, Stand upright and be strong, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. May your hands always be busy, May your feet always be swift, May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift. May your heart always be joyful, May your song always be sung, May you stay forever young, Forever young, forever young, May you stay forever young. |

Early one mornin' the sun was shinin'.
I was laying in bed Wond'rin' if she'd changed it all; If her hair was still red. Her folks, they said, our lives together Sure was gonna be rough. They never did like Mama's homemade dress. Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough And I was standin' on the side of the road, Rain fallin' on my shoes, Heading out for the east coast. Lord knows I've paid some dues gettin' through, Tangled up in blue. She was married when we first meet. Soon to be divorced. I helped her out of a jam, I guess, But I used a little too much force. We drove that car as far as we could; Abandoned it out west. Split it up on a dark sad night; Both agreein' it was best. She turned around to look at me As I was walkin' away. I heard her say over my shoulder "We'll meet again someday on the avenue." Tangled up in blue. I had a job in the great north woods Workin' as a cook for a spell, But I never did like it all that much And one day the axe just fell. So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I was lucky to be employed Workin' for a while on a fishin' boat Right outside of Delacroix, But all the while I was alone. The past was close behind. I seen a lot of women, But she never escaped my mind and I just grew Tangled up in blue. She was workin' in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer. I just kept lookin' at the side of her face In the spotlight so clear And later on as the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same, She was standin' there in back of my chair. Said to me, "Don't I know your name?" I muttered somethin' underneath my breath. She studied the lines on my face. I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe. Tangled up in blue. She lit a burner on the stove And offered me a pipe. "I thought you'd never say hello," she said, "You look like the silent type." Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me. Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burnin' coal Pourin' off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you Tangled up in blue. I lived with them on Montague Street In a basement down the stairs. There was music in the cafes at night And revolution in the air. Then he started into dealin' with slaves And somethin' inside of him died. She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside And when finally the bottom fell out, I became withdrawn. The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keepin' on like a bird that flew Tangled up in blue. So now I'm goin' back again. I got to get her somehow. All the people we used to know; They're an illusion to me now. Some are mathematicians. Some are carpenter's wives. Don't know how it all got started. I don't what they're doin' with their lives, But me, I'm still on the road Headin' for another joint. We always did feel the same. We just saw it from a different point of view. |

Oh, sister, when I come to lie in your arms
You should not treat me like a stranger. Our Father would not like the way that you act And you must realize the danger. Oh, sister, am I not a brother to you And one deserving of affection? And is our purpose not the same on this earth, To love and follow His direction? We grew up together From the cradle to the grave We died and were reborn And then mysteriously saved. Oh, sister, when I come to knock on your door, Don't turn away, you'll create sorrow. Time is an ocean but it ends at the shore You may not see me tomorrow. |

You may be an ambassador to England or France,
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance, You may be the heavyweight champion of the world, You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage, You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage, You may be a business man or some high degree thief, They may call you Doctor or they may call you Chief But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk, You may be the head of some big TV network, You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame, You may be living in another country under another name But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. You may be a construction worker working on a home, You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome, You might own guns and you might even own tanks, You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride, You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side, You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair, You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk, Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk, You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread, You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody, Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy, You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy, You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray, You may call me anything but no matter what you say You're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody. Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody. |

Standing on the waters casting your bread
While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing. Distant ships sailing into the mist, You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing. Freedom just around the corner for you But with the truth so far off, what good will it do? Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. So swiftly the sun sets in the sky, You rise up and say goodbye to no one. Fools rush in where angels fear to tread, Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one. Shedding off one more layer of skin, Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds, Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister. You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister. Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame, You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy, The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers. In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed, Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features. Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space, Half asleep near the stars with a small dog licking your face. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame, Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain. Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks, Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain, False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin, Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman. It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray, A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet. He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat, Take the motherless children off the street And place them at the feet of a harlot. Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants, Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response. Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune, Bird fly high by the light of the moon, |

Broken lines, broken strings,
Broken threads, broken springs, Broken idols, broken heads, People sleeping in broken beds. Ain't no use jiving Ain't no use joking Everything is broken. Broken bottles, broken plates, Broken switches, broken gates, Broken dishes, broken parts, Streets are filled with broken hearts. Broken words never meant to be spoken, Everything is broken. Seem like every time you stop and turn around Something else just hit the ground Broken cutters, broken saws, Broken buckles, broken laws, Broken bodies, broken bones, Broken voices on broken phones. Take a deep breath, feel like you're chokin', Everything is broken. Every time you leave and go off someplace Things fall to pieces in my face Broken hands on broken ploughs, Broken treaties, broken vows, Broken pipes, broken tools, People bending broken rules. Hound dog howling, bull frog croaking, Everything is broken. |

It was in another lifetime;
One of toil and blood When blackness was a virtue And the road was full of mud. I come in from the wilderness, A creature void of form. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". If I pass this way again, You can rest assured I'll always do my best for her, On that I give my word. In a world of steel-eyed death and men Who are fighting to be warm, "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Not a word was spoke between us. There was no risk involved. Nothing up to that point Had even been resolved. Try imagining a place where It's always safe and warm. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". I was burned out from exhaustion. Buried in the hail. Poisoned in the bushes And blown out on the trail. Hunted like a crocodile Ravaged in the corn. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Suddenly, I turned around And she was standin' there With silver bracelets on her wrists And flowers in her hair. She walked up to me so gracefully And took my crown of thorns. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Now the bonds are broken, But they can be retied. Oh, one more journey to the woods; The holes where spirits hide. It's a neverending battle For a peace that's always torn. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Well, the deputy walks on hard nails And the preacher rides a mount, But nothing really matters much. It's doom alone that counts And the one-eyed undertaker; He blows a futile horn. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Well, I've heard newborn babies Cryin' like a mournin' dove And old men with broken teeth Stranded without love. Do I understand your question, man? Is it hopeless and forlorn? "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". And now there's a wall between us. Somethin' there's been lost. I took too much for granted. I got my signals crossed. Yeah, just to think that it all began On an uneventful morn. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". In a little hilltop village They gambled for my clothes. I bargained for salvation And you give me a lethal dose. I offered up my innocence; Got repaid with scorn. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country, But I'm bound to cross the line. Beauty walks on a razor's edge. Someday I'll make it mine. If I could only turn back the clock To when God and her were born. "Come in" she said, "I'll give you Shelter from the storm". |
