INTRODUCTION
핑크 플로이드(Pink Floyd)의 커버 디자인으로 유명한 힙노시스(Hipgnosis)가 창조한 신비로운 분위기는 몇몇 곡들의 이미지와도 맞아떨어진다. 밴드의 신비주의적 성향이 극대화된 작품들인 두 대곡 `The Rain Song`과 `No Quarter`가 그것인데, `The Rain Song`에서 존 폴 존스가 들려주는 아련하고 꿈결 같은 멜로트론 사 운드는 프로그레시브적인 분위기를 물씬 내뿜고 있으며, 지극히 몽환적이고 환각적인 색채를 담은 `No Quarter`의 완성도 높은 미학적 구성은 다른 어느 작품에서도 볼 수 없는 독특한 것이었다.
하지만 앨범의 전체적인 색깔은 어느 한 쪽으로만 치우쳐 있지 않다. `The Song Remains The Same`의 직선적인 연주와 역동성, 미국 차트 51위를 기록한 `Over The Hills And Far Away`를 수놓는 편안한 어쿠스틱 포크의 분위기, 역시 미국에서 20위에 올랐던 `D`yer Ma`ker`를 수놓는 레게리듬을 바탕으로 한 친근한 멜로디, 그리고 제임스 브라운(James Brown)의 소울에 영향을 받은 듯한 `The Crunge` 등은 밴드가 이 앨범을 통해 보여주려 했던 다양성을 멋지게 드러내는 곡들이다. 앨범은 영국과 미국에서 모두 1위에 올랐다([Coda]를제외한 이후의 모든 스튜디오 앨범들은 미국과 영국에서 1위를 기록한다). ....  ....
