INTRODUCTION
Soilwork의 새앨범과 바이오에 관해 언급하기 전에 그들의 광팬 중 한명인 Metal God의 평을 읽어보기 바란다. 설마 Metal God이 실수를 하진 않을 것이다. "소일워크는 메탈계에 새로운 사운드를 제시한다. 이들이 만든 기존 스타일의 조합은 매우 비범하고도 훌륭하다. 소일워크는 정형화된 메탈의 틀을 깨기 위해 정말 많은 노력 을 기울였고 다른 어떤 메탈 밴드들이 시도한 적 없는 미래 지향적 접근을 시도하고 있다. 특히 보컬의 스피디하고 변화가 심한 점이 맘에 든다. 보컬은 독자적이고 유일무이한 방법으로 노래를 한다. Soilwork는 1995년 Inferior Breed라는 이름으로 시작되었다. 밴드명을 바꾸기 전에 한 장의 데모를 발표했었다. 당시 라인업은 Peter Witchers(g), Bjorn Strid(vo), Ludvig Svartz(g), Jimmy Persson(dr), Carlos Del Olmo Holmberg(key) 였고 후에 이들은 베이스에 Ola Fink를 영입하였다. Soilwork란 밴드명은 이들 스웨덴 밴드의 경력을 잘 표현하고 있는데 "진흙밭에서 시작하여 길을 만들어 간다."라는 의미이다.
1997년 이들은 "In Dreams We Fall Into The Eternal Lake"라는 타이틀의 데모를 발표하는데 이것은 Inferior Breed 시절보다 더욱 멜로딕하고 빠른 연주를 들려주는 앨범이다.Soilwork는 WAR music과 접촉을 하였지만 당시 War music은Soilwork 의 앨범을 녹음할 여건이 되지 않았다. 그래서 이들은 프랑스의 Listenable Records와 계약을 했다.
데뷔앨범 Steelbath Suicide는 스웨덴 예테보리의 Studio Fredman에서 녹음되었고 1998년에 발매되었으며 전세계 매거진과 팬들로부터 많은 호평을 받았다. 앨범 발매 직후 커다란 멤버체인지가 있었다. 바로 기타리스트 Ludvig과 드러머 Jimmy가 밴드를 떠난 것이다. 이유는 음악적 견해차이 때문이었다.
소일워크는 두명의 새로운 멤버들을 영입하였다. 새로운 기타리스트 Ole Frenning은 Black Sabbath 스타일의 메틀을 추구하는 인물이며 드러머 Henry Ranta는 스톡홀름 공연에서 만났다. Henry는 Soilwork 멤버들에게 자신의 데모 테이프를 전해 주었고 멤버들은 Henry가 밴드에 적격인 드러머라는 것을 알았다.
이런 라인업으로 Krisiun, Darkane, Naglfar 등의 밴드들과 유럽 투어에 들어갔다. 1999년 초 두 번째 앨범 The Chainheart Machine의 녹음을 위해 다시 Studio Fredman에 들어갔다. 이 앨범은 1999년에 발매되었으며 역시 전세계적으로 많은 호평을 받았다.
새 앨범의 레코딩 직후 이들은 다시 Defleshed, Cannibal Corpse, Marduk 등과 함께 주말을 이용한 투어에 들어갔다. The Chainheart Machine은 일본에서도 빅히트를 기록했고, Dark Tranquillity와 함께 일본에서 짧은 프로모션 투어를 했다.
이들의 이런 경력을 볼 때 이제는 새로운 진전을 감행할 때가 되었다. 수많은 레이블들이 그들에게 계약조건을 제시했고 이들은 마침내 Nuclear Blast와 새로운 계약을 맺었다.
이들은 다시 Studio Fredman으로 돌아가 세번째 앨범인 A Predator's Portrait를 녹음했다. 이번 앨범은 새로운 무엇인가를 담고 있는데 바로 보컬 Bjorn이 처음으로 클린보컬을 시도했다는 점이다. 그것은 멤버들이 생각했던 것이었고 본 앨범은 지금까지 이들의 앨범 중 가장 강력한 앨범이다. 멤버들의 생각은 절대적으로 옳았다. 왜냐하면 'Needlefeast', 'Bastard Chain', 'Like The Average Stalker', 'The Analyst', ' Final Fatal Force' 등의 곡들은 스웨덴 데스/스래쉬 메틀계의 진정한 명곡들이기 때문이다. 만약 이것을 믿을 수 없다면 Rob의 말을 다시 한 번 읽어보기 바란다. ....  ....
