Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin' high and mighty traps Pounced with fire on flaming roads Using ideas as my maps "We'll meet on edges soon" said I Proud 'neath heated brow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth "Rip down all hate" I screamed Lies that life is black and white Spoke from my skull, I dreamed Romantic facts of musketeers Foundationed deep somehow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now Girl's faces formed the forward path From phony jealousy To memorizing politics Of ancient history Flung down by corpse evangelists Unthought of, though, somehow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now A self-ordained professor's tongue Too serious to fool Spouted out that liberty Is just equality in school "Equality," I spoke the word As if a wedding vow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand At the mongrel dogs who teach Fearing not I'd become my enemy In the instant that I preach My existence led by confusion boats Mutiny from stern to bow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats Too noble to neglect Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect Good and bad, I define these terms Quite clear, no doubt, somehow Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now |

Crash on the levee, mama,
Water's gonna overflow, Swamp's gonna rise, No boat's gonna row. Now, you can train on down To Williams Point, You can bust your feet, You can rock this joint. But oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now? You're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow. Now, don't you try an' move me, You're just gonna lose. There's a crash on the levee And, mama, you've been refused. Well, it's sugar for sugar And salt for salt, If you go down in the flood, It's gonna be your own fault. Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now? You're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow. Well, that high tide's risin', Mama, don't you let me down. Pack up your suitcase, Mama, don't you make a sound. Now, it's king for king, Queen for queen, It's gonna be the meanest flood That anybody's seen. Oh mama, ain't you gonna miss your best friend now? Yes, you're gonna have to find yourself Another best friend, somehow. |

You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast Yonder stands your orphan with his gun Crying like a fire in the sun Look out, the saints are comin' through And it's all over now, Baby Blue The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense Take what you have gathered from coincidence The empty-handed painter from your streets Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets The sky too is folding under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue All your seasick sailors, they're all rowing home Your empty-handed army is all going home Your lover who just walked out the door Has taken all his blankets from the floor The carpet too is moving under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue Leave your stepping stones behind there, something calls for you Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you The vagabond who's rapping at your door Is standing in the clothes that you once wore Strike another match, go start anew And it's all over now, Baby Blue |

Most of the time, I'm clear focused all around
Most of the time, I can keep both feet on the ground I can follow the path, I can read the signs Stay right with it when the road unwinds I can handle whatever I stumble upon I don't even notice she's gone Most of the time Most of the time, it's well understood Most of the time, I wouldn't change it if I could I can't make it all match up, I can hold my own I can deal with the situation right down to the bone I can survive, I can endure And I don't even think about her Most of the time Most of the time, my head is on straight Most of the time, I'm strong enough not to hate I don't build up illusion 'till it makes me sick I ain't afraid of confusion no matter how thick I can smile in the face of mankind Don't even remember what her lips felt like on mine Most of the time Most of the time, she ain't even in my mind I wouldn't know her if I saw her, she's that far behind Most of the time, I can't even be sure If she was ever with me or if I was with her Most of the time, I'm halfway content Most of the time, I know exactly where it all went I don't cheat on myself, I don't run and hide Hide from the feelings, that are buried inside I don't compromise and I don't pretend I don't even care if I ever see her again Most of the time |

On a night like this
So glad you came around Hold on to me so tight And heat up some coffee grounds We got much to talk about And much to reminisce It sure is right On a night like this On a night like this So glad you've come to stay Hold on to me, pretty miss Say you'll never go away to stray Run your fingers down my spine Bring me a touch of bliss It sure feels right On a night like this On a night like this I can't get any sleep The air is so cold outside And the snow's so deep Build a fire, throw on logs And listen to it hiss And let it burn, burn, burn, burn On a night like this Put your body next to mine And keep me company There is plenty a room for all So please don't elbow me Let the four winds blow Around this old cabin door If I'm not too far off I think we did this once before There's more frost on the window glass With each new tender kiss But it sure feels right On a night like this |

1. Now There's a man you'll hear about
Most anywhere you go, And his holdings are in Texas And his name is Diamond Joe. 2. And he carries all his money In a diamond-studded jar. He never took much trouble With the process of the law. 3. I hired out to Diamond Joe, boys, Did offer him my hand, He gave a string of horses So old they could not stand. 4. And I nearly starved to death, boys, He did mistreat me so, And I never saved a dollar In the pay of Diamond Joe. 5. Now his bread it was corn dodger And his meat you couldn't chaw, Nearly drove me crazy With the waggin' of his jaw. 6. And the tellin' of his story, Mean to let you know That there never was a rounder That could lie like Diamond Joe. Instrumental 7. Now, I tried three times to quit him, But he did argue so I'm still punchin' cattle In the pay of Diamond Joe. 8. And when I'm called up yonder And it's my time to go, Give my blankets to my buddies Give the fleas to Diamond Joe. |

Your breath is sweet, your eyes are like
Two jewels in the sky. Your back is straight, your hair is smooth On the pillow where you lie. But I don't sense affection No gratitude or love. Your loyalty is not to me but to the stars above. Chourus : One more cup of coffee for the road. One more cup of coffee 'fore I go, To the valley below. Your daddy he's an outlaw And a wanderer by trade. He'll teach you how to pick an' choose And how to throw the blade. And he oversees his kingdom So no stranger does intrude. His voice it trembles as he calls out For another plate of food. Chorus Your sister sees the future Like your momma and yourself. You've never learned to read or write There's no books upon your shelf. And your pleasure know no limits Your voice is like a meadow lark. But your heart is like an ocean Mysterious and dark. Chorus |

I'm beginning to hear voices and there's no one around
Well, I'm all used up and the fields have turned brown I went to church on Sunday and she passed by My love for her is taking such a long time to die I'm waist deep, waist deep in the mist It's almost like, almost like I don't exist I'm twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound The walls of pride are high and wide Can't see over to the other side It's such a sad thing to see beauty decay It's sadder still to feel your heart torn away One look at you and I'm out of control Like the universe has swallowed me whole I'm twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound There's too many people, too many to recall I thought some of 'em were friends of mine, I was wrong about 'em all Well, the road is rocky and the hillside's mud Up over my head nothing but clouds of blood I found my world, found my world in you But your love just hasn't proved true I'm twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound Twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound Oh, the winds in Chicago have torn me to shreds Reality has always had too many heads Some things last longer than you think they will Some kind of things you can never kill 'Cause it's you and you only I been thinking about But you can't see in and it's hard lookin' out I'm twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound Well, the fats in the fire and the water's in the tank Well, the whiskey's in the jar and the money's in the bank I tried to love and protect you because I cared I'm gonna remember forever the joy that we shared Looking at you and I'm on my bended knee You have no idea what you do to me I'm twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound Twenty miles out of town in cold irons bound |

My love, she speaks like silence
Without ideals or violence She doesn't have to say she's faithful Yet she's true like ice, like fire People carry roses And make promises by the hours My love, she laughs like the flowers Valentines can't buy her In the dime stores and bus stations People talk of situations Read books, repeat quotations Draw conclusions on the wall Some speak of the future My love, she speaks softly She knows there's no success like failure And that failure's no success at all The cloak and dagger dangles Madams light the candles In ceremonies of the horsemen Even the pawn must hold a grudge Statues made of matchsticks Crumble into one another My love winks, she does not bother She knows too much to argue or to judge The bridge at midnight trembles The country doctor rambles Banker's nieces seek perfection Expecting all the gifts that wise men bring The wind howls like a hammer And the night blows rainy My love, she's like some raven At my window with a broken wing |

Early one morning, the sun was shining
I was laying in bed Wondering if she'd changed it all If her hair was still red Her folks, they said our lives together Sure was gonna be rough They never did like mama's homemade dress Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough And I was standing on the side of the road Rain falling on my shoes Heading out for the east coast Lord knows I've paid some dues getting through Tangled up in blue She was married when we first met Soon to be divorced I helped her out of a jam, I guess But I used a little too much force We drove that car as far as we could Abandoned it out west Split up on a dark, sad night Both agreeing it was best She turned around to look at me As I was walking away I heard her say over my shoulder "We'll meet again someday on the avenue" Tangled up in blue I had a job in the great north woods Working as a cook for a spell But I never did like it all that much And one day the axe just fell So I drifted down to New Orleans Where I's lucky for to be employed Working for a while on a fishing boat Right outside of Delacroix But all the while I was alone The past was close behind I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind and I just grew Tangled up in blue She was working in a topless place And I stopped in for a beer I just kept looking at the sight of her face In the spotlight so clear And later on when the crowd thinned out I's just about to do the same She was standing there in back of my chair Said, "Tell me, don't I know your name?" I muttered something underneath my breath She studied the lines on my face I must admit I felt a little uneasy When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe Tangled up in blue She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe "I thought you'd never say hello," she said "You look like the silent type" Then she opened up a book of poems And handed it to me Written by an Italian poet From the thirteenth century And every one of them words rang true And glowed like burning coal Pouring off of every page Like it was written in my soul from me to you Tangled up in blue I lived with them on Montague Street In a basement down the stairs There was music in the cafés at night And revolution in the air Then he started into dealing with slaves And something inside of him died She had to sell everything she owned And froze up inside And when finally the bottom fell out I became withdrawn The only thing I knew how to do Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew Tangled up in blue So now I'm going back again I got to get her somehow All the people we used to know They're an illusion to me now Some are mathematicians Some are carpenter's wives Don't know how it all got started I don't what they do with their lives But me, I'm still on the road Heading for another joint We always did feel the same We just saw it from a different point of view Tangled up in blue |

The seasons they are turning
And my sad heart is yearning To hear again the songbird's sweet melodious tone Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? The dusky light the day is losing Orchids, poppies, black eyed susan The earth and sky that melts with flesh and bone Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? The air is thick and heavy All along the levee Where the geese into the countryside have flown Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? Well, I'm preaching peace and harmony The blessings of tranquility Yet I know when the time is right to strike I take you 'cross the river, dear You've no need to linger here I know the kinds of things you like The clouds are turning crimson The leaves fall from the limbs and The branches cast their shadows over stone Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? The boulevards of cypress trees The masquerade of birds and bees The petals pink and white, the wind has blown Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? The trailing moss in mystic glow The purple blossom, soft as snow My tears keep flowing to the sea Doctor, lawyer, indian chief It takes a thief to catch a thief For whom does the bell toll for, love? It tolls for you and me Old pulse's running through my palm The sharp hills are rising from Yellow fields with twisted oaks that grow Won't you meet me out in the moonlight alone? |
