INTRODUCTION
Billy Idol 의 Rebel Yell 의 커버곡과 4곡의 라이브를 수록한 Children of bodom 의 베스트 앨범, 베스트 음반! Bestbreeder from 1997 to 2000! 1993년, Inearthed의 전신으로 시작된 Children Of Bodom은 현재 전세계를 들끓게 한, In Flames, Dark Tranqui llity, Soilwork 등과 함께 유럽 멜로딕 데스 메탈의 선봉장으로 일컬어지고 있다. 핀란드, Espoo에 위치한 Bodom 강에서 1960대에 발생했던 참혹한 살인사건에서 유래된 이름, Children of Bodom은 초기 데스/쓰래쉬적인 튠에서 블랙/데스 메탈릭한 사운드로 변모해 나갔고 클래식 헤비 메탈의 영향력을 수용하여 독창적인 사운드를 구축해 나가기 시작했다.
1997년, Alexi의 Thy Serpent 가입과 동시에 Children of Bodom은 Spinefarm과의 계약을 성공적으로 이끌어낼 수 있었고, Spinefarm 컴필레이션 앨범에 수록된 Metallilitto에서 Deadnight Warrior는 가히 폭발적인 반응을 얻게 된다.
1997년 11월 발매된 정규 데뷔작 Something Wild(핀란드 1997년 11월/유럽 1998년) 는 Children of Bodom을 단숨에 핀란드 언더그라운드 메탈 씬의 제왕으로 등극케 하면서 대중 매체 로부터 폭발적인 박수갈채를 이끌어 낸다. Dimmu Borgir 와의 1997년 11월 Helsinki 공연은 현재까지 '가장 거칠었던 공연'으로 기록되고 있으며, 전설적인 Wacken 공연, Hypocrisy, Benediction, Dismember와의 유럽투어 역시 밴드의 성공 가도에 기폭제와 같은 역할을 실현케 했는데, Nuclear Blast 와의 유럽 지역 계약은 물론 일본, 대만, 한국에까지 이들의 명성은 순식간에 일파 만파로 전해져 아시아 지역에서도 라이센스 앨범을 통해 자신들의 위상을 전하게 된다.
1998년 말, 프로듀서 Anssi Kippo와 Astia Studio에서 레코딩 된 두 번째 정규 작 Hatebreeder는 전설적인 핀란드의 Waltari의 멤버 Mikko Karmilla에 의해 Finnvox Studios에서 최종 완성되면서, 수록된 Children of Bodom은 핀란드 싱글 차트에 오랜 기간 머무는 기염을 토하게 된다. 이후 이들의 1997년 7월, 첫 번째 일본 방문을 기념 하는 동시에 너무나도 성공적이었던 당시 투어 실황을 기억하기 위해 Tokyo Warheart 라이브 앨범을 한정 반 형식으로 완성하게 되고, 커버는 핀란드의 저명한 만화가 Mr. Ville Pirnen이 죽음의 신과 고질라 사이의 전투를 앨범 커버에 풍자스럽게 묘사하기도 했다.
유럽 멜로딕 데스는 물론 전세계 익스트림 음악의 정점에 오르게 된 Children of Bodom은 새로운 앨범의 창조적인 변화와 작업을 위해 핀란드가 아닌 스웨덴으로 눈을 돌려 Hypocrisy/Pain의 메인 맨 Peter Tagtgren의 전설적인 Abyss Studios 에서 작업하게 되었고, Something Wild에서의 헤비 하면서도 여과되지 않았던 사운드에 Hatebreeder에서 보여주었던 괴물 같은 테크닉, 그리고 새로운 변화와 한 단계 성숙한 모습을 2001년 Follow the Reaper앨범에 모두 담아내게 되었다.
멜로딕 하면서도 중독성 짙은 코러스 라인, 브루탈한 9곡은 현재까지도 멜로딕 데스 메탈 계의 필수 교과서로 평가 받고 있는데, 이번 Bestbreeder는 일본에 이어 한국이 전세계 유일하게 이 앨범을 발매한 국가가 된다.
