INTRODUCTION
이미 우리들에게 너무나 잘 알려져 있는 크리스찬 팝-메탈 밴드, Stryper가 15년 만에 새로운 앨범으로 우리들에게 돌아왔다. 많은 이들은 Stryper가 20년 전 음악 씬에 몰고 왔던 Yellow and black attack 폭풍과 함께 팝-메틀이라는 장르를 창조해낸 것을 기억하는 것은 물론 그 외 다른 이들은 종교적인 속죄에 대한 메시지 등을 굳 게 결의한 개척자적 역할을 한 이 4명으로 기억하고 있을 것이다. 오늘날 마침내 귀환한 이 전설적인 4인조는 이전 어느 때보다 더욱 강렬한 결의와 의지 그리고 개혁의 모습을 담은 뜨거운 모습을 보여주고 있으며, 3명의 오리지널 라인 업에(리드 보컬/Michael Sweet, 드러머/Robert Sweet, 기타 Oz Fox) 새 멤버인 베이스 Tracy Ferrie를 더한 Stryper는 1990년 발매한 Against the Law 이후 첫 정규 앨범을 발매하게 되었다.
Stryper의 Reborn 앨범은 이들의 7번째 정규 작이자 Big3 레코드를 통한 데뷔인 동시에, 멜로디 가득한 보컬과 화려한 연주, 강렬한 주제로 뜨거운 행진을 선보여주면서 여기에 뚜렷한 하드 록 적 영향과 자신들만의 강렬한 음악적 기초를 풍부하게 녹인 음악을 담고 있다. Michael Sweet와 Kenny Lewis(이전 Sweet의 솔로 프로젝트에 참여)에 의해 프로듀스 된 이번 Reborn앨범에는 새로운 곡들과 함께 두 곡의 보너스 트랙들을 - Stryper버전의 Amazing Grace를 10,000 Years로 새롭게 개명, 그리고 자신들의 클래식 In God We Trust를 라이브 버전으로 녹음 - 담고 있어 Stryper의 오랜 팬들은 물론 새로운 팬들까지 단숨에 사로잡고 말 것이다.
부활에 대한 중심적인 주제를 넘어서서 용서에 대한 내용을 담은 If I Die, 하나님의 인내심을 노래하는 Wait for You, 진정한 자기 계발을 위한 Open Your Eyes 같은 트랙들이 눈에 띄는 동시에, When Did I See You Cry는 하나님이 가난한 자들이나 마약에 빠져있는 사람들, 방황하는 모든 사람들의 인생을 바꿔줄 수 있다는 현실을 전해주고 있다. "하나님의 권능은 살아있다. 하지만 우리가 가끔 이를 놓치고 있는 것뿐이다. "라고 Sweet는 자신의 뜻을 전한다.
Stryper는 지난 세월 동안 고난과 탈선에 대한 주제를 다뤄왔는데, 그 시초는 California, Orange County의 Roxx Regime이라는 개러지 밴드에서 시작되었다. 당시 Los Angeles 지역에서 높은 명성을 거둔 이들 4인조는 1984년 마침내 Enigma Records와 계약하면서 데뷔 미니 앨범 The Yellow and Black Attack을 발매하게 된다. 최초의 크리스찬 록 밴드로 메인 스트림 씬에서 큰 성공을 거둔 이들은 전세계적으로 무려 8백 만장이상의 판매고를 보였고 1986년 작 To Hell with the Devil은 CCM Magazine에서 선정한 "100장의 위대한 크리스찬 음악"으로 선정되는가 하면 RIAA 공식 플래티넘 앨범으로 기록되기도 했다. 동시에 여기에 수록된 Honestly는 빌보드 차트40위에 오르는 기염을 토하면서 최고 23위까지 상승되는 모습을 보여주었다. Soldiers Under Command(1985)와 In God We Trust(1988)는 RIAA 골드 앨범으로서 빌보드 앨범 차트 200위안에서 오랜 기간 머물기도 했다.
1980년대부터 가장 흥분되는 밴드 중 하나로 손꼽히고 있는 Stryper는 MTV, VH1를 통한 엄청난 방영과 지원을 얻었음은 물론 Rolling Stone, Time, Spin, Newsweek등 유수의 대중지 커버를 장식하면서 팝 메틀 아이콘으로 남게 된다. 항상 Stryper는 박수갈채의 중심에 있어왔지만 Michael Sweet는 그 스포트 라이트를 다른 사람에게 넘겨주는 겸손함을 보여줘 왔고, "단 하나의 주제가 이번 새 앨범의 모든 곡들에 흩뿌려 담겨 있다.
바로 ’주 예수를 보라’ 인 것이다. 어떤 사람들은 이 얘기를 듣는 것 조차 짜증내 하지만, 우리는 하나님이 주 예수의 사랑과 자비 그리고 은혜를 함께 나누기를 원하시고 있다.
