INTRODUCTION
“산타나의 3부작 완결편” [All That I Am] 산타나는 꼭 알려주고 싶은 게 있다. 오래 전부터 매체와 평단은 산타나 하면 무조건 그의 이름 앞에 ‘라틴 록’이란 수식을 붙여왔다. 티토 푸엔테(Tito Puente)와 크림(Cream)이 만난 퓨전으로 정의되는 것이 불만은 아니었지만 그렇다고 만족은 아니었다. 그는 자신의 음악이 라틴 록 에 앞서서 ‘아프리칸 펑크(Funk)’로 정의되고 통칭되기를 원했다. 그는 ‘자유로운 영혼’이라고 할 아프로 비트(Afro-Beat)야말로 자신의 정체이며 미래에도 지속적으로 추구해 나갈 길이라는 것만은 팬들에게 전하고 싶었다.
음악계의 권력자 클라이브 데이비스(Clive Davis)와 꾸려낸 1999년 [Supernatural]의 “Africa Bamba”와 2002년 [Shaman]의 “Foo Foo”는 분명 그의 음악이 라틴의 애조(哀調)적 낭만이 아닌, 흥겨운 아프리카의 부락 축제를 연상시킴을 확인케 한다. 사실 상식화된 라틴 록이라는 것도 원류를 따라가면 아메리카로 팔려온 ‘약속의 땅’ 사람들 소리가 유럽의 정서, 중남미의 토착성과 섞이면서 배태된 음악이다.
“Africa Bamba”와 “Foo Foo”는 그러나 앨범의 첫 곡이 아니었다. 하지만 클라이브 데이비스와의 세번째 케미스트리이자 산타나 세대 및 장르 퓨전 3부작 프로젝트의 완결편인 이번 신보에서 아프리칸 펑크는 당당 첫 곡으로 융기한다. “Hermes(헤르미스)”는 경쾌한 콩가 연주와 아리스타에서 내놓은 보도자료 대로 ‘금요일 밤의 소란, 토요일 밤의 혼잡, 일요일 아침의 교회집회’의 이미지를 연상시키는 열띤 ‘콜 앤 리스펀스’로 완연한 아프리카의 부족음악, 그 아프리칸 펑크다.
이 곡은 펠라 쿠티(Fela Kuti)를 비롯한 아프로 비트를 글로벌화한 아프리카 뮤지션의 영혼을 기리는 메시지를 담고 있다고 한다. 헤르미스는 주지하다시피 그리스 신화 올림푸스 12신 가운데 신들의 메시지를 전하는 전령의 신이다. 아프리카 뮤지션을 전제하는 것이겠지만, 자신의 음악 아이덴티티를 대중의 뇌리에 저장하고자 하는 본인의 생래적 임무를 비유하는 것인지도 모른다. ‘난 아프리칸 펑크의 전령이다!’
실제로 그는 이렇게 말한다. “난 누구라도 곡을 들을 때 그 풍요로운 아프리카 땅의 숨결이 느껴지는 곡을 만들고자 했다. 아프리카를 가게 되면 난 관광객이 아니라 앎을 흡수하고 찾는 아티스트가 된다. “Hermes”는 그 앎의 일부다.” 신보의 타이틀도 이 점과 관련해 심상치 않다. ‘내 자신의 모든 것’이란 어휘부터가 직설적 존재증명의 분위기를 풍긴다. 앞의 두 앨범보다는 자신을, 자신의 음악 정체성을 더 본격적으로 드러냈음을 첫 곡 “Hermes”에서 벌써 확성(擴聲)하고 있는 것이다. 이를테면 음악 정체성의 노출수위를 높인 것!
이에 따라 앨범은 라틴의 선율감을 상대적으로 조금 줄이는 대신, 좀 더 아프로적인 비트를 살린 느낌이다. 기성세대에게 산타나하면 떠오르는 “Samba Pa Ti”, “Moonflower”, “I Love You Too Much”, 그리고 신세대의 “Maria, Maria”, “Put Your Lights On” 풍의 노래가 확실히 적다. 때문에 상식적 감화력은 전작보다 낮을 수도 있지만, 자신의 만족도는 높을 것으로 생각된다. 어떤 점에서 가장 진정한 산타나 앨범이라고 할 수 있다.
가장 진정한 산타나 앨범
“El Fuego(엘 푸에고, 불)”, 아웃캐스트의 빅 보이(Big Boi)와 힙합 여신 메리 제이 블라이지(Mary J. Blige)와 호흡을 맞춘 “My Man”, 에어로스미스의 스티븐 타일러(Steven Tyler)와 짝이 된 “Just Feel Better”, 최근 최고의 주가를 올리는 펀(fun) 힙합의 대명사 블랙 아이드 피스의 윌.아이.엠(Will.I.Am)의 “I Am Somebody”, 소울의 어린 카리스마 조스 스톤(Joss Stone)과 래퍼 션 폴(Sean Paul)이 기막힌 하모니를 선사하는 “Cry Baby Cry” 등 전체적으로 라틴의 정(靜)보다는 펑크의 동(動)을 살리고 있다. 물론 상대적으로다.
앨범이 동적이라는 점과 함께 또 하나 중요한 포인트는 신보는 더욱 라이브적으로 꾸몄다는 점이다. 세련된 가공으로 곡을 다림질했다기보다는 마치 얼마 후 열릴 콘서트에서 연주하려고 만들었다고 할까. 약간은 거칠면서 흥에 넘치는 곡들이 벌써 라이브의 열띤 객석과의 피드백을 예약한다.
산타나의 3부작을 들으면서 감탄하는 대목은 그는 후배든 동료든 피쳐링한 가수들을 게스트로 활용하는 것이 아니라 사실상 호스트로 예우한다는 점이다. 그는 가능한 한 피쳐링 뮤지션이 곡을 쓰는 방안에 기초하는 듯 보인다. 이것은 절대로 그 가수들을 자신의 음악에 예속시키는 것이 아니라 자신이 그의 장르에 겸허하게 들어가는 것을 말한다.
그는 서로 상이한 인종과 문화가 마주 보는 퓨전, 유쾌한 경계 허물기를 바란다. 거기서 그는 듣는 사람들이 다양성을 맛보기를 목표하는 것이다. “우리 모두가 서로 내부적으로 섞여있음을 사람들이 알아야 할 시점이다. 내 음악은 그 다양성을 담아낸다. 난 여러 문화와 연관되어 있고, 내 음악에 그것이 반영되기를 원한다.”
앨범에 참여하는 뮤지션들은 산타나와 같이 한다고 자신의 영토를 파괴하기를 요구받지 않는다. 그냥 자신이 평소에 해왔던 것을 하면 된다. “Just Feel Better”는 에어로스미스적이지 산타나적이지 않으며 “I Am Somebody” 역시 산타나보다는 블랙 아이드 피스 분위기가 압도한다. 심지어 이름부터가 ‘윌.아이.엠’적이다. 아마도 앨범 거의 전부를, 그것도 세 차례나 게스트(아니 호스트) 뮤지션과 꾸려낼 수 있는 비결이 여기에, 자신을 낮추는 미덕에 있지 않을까. 인간성의 승리!
[Supernatural]의 스매시 히트는 클라이브 데이비스란 이름 때문에도 ‘기획 명반’이라는 조금은 비호의적인 평이 있었던 것도 사실이다. 음악계의 권력자와의 동행은 아무래도 ‘막후 지원’이 절대적이라는 선입견이 따른다. 하지만 산타나는 여지가 없다. 클라이브나 자신이나 대중적으로 좋은 앨범에 굶주려 있는(same hunger!) 것 뿐이라고 못 박는다. “보라. 1973년부터 1997년까지 난 별의별 음악을 다 해왔다. 하지만 더 대중적인 기반으로 돌아가는 것의 중요성을 일깨운 사람은 클라이브 데이비스였다. 우리의 밀월은 결코 끝나지 않는다.” 하긴 그가 아티스트 독자성이라는 록의 강령에 수절할 나이도 아니다.
게스트의 명단은 언제나 그러하듯 화려하다. 상기한 이름들 외에도 지난 번 [Shaman]의 싱글이었던 “The Game Of Love”의 주인공 미셀 브랜치(Michelle Branch), 메탈리카의 커크 해밋(Kirk Hammett), 아메리칸 아이들의 우승자 보 바이스(Bo Bice), 텍스-멕스의 재현을 알린 로스 론리 보이스(Los Lonely Boys), 그리고 소울 가수 앤서니 해밀턴(Anthony Hamilton) 등이 산타나 기타와의 하모니를 위해 나섰다.
“The Game Of Love”의 길을 그대로 밟은 듯한 곡 “I’m Feeling You”가 미국에서는 첫 싱글로 내정되었고 유럽에서는 스티븐 타일러의 “Just Feel Better”가 홍보 싱글로 채택되었다. 하지만 윌.아이.엠이 종횡무진 랩의 흥을 토하는 재미난 “I Am Somebody”도 그 못지않게 우리 팬들의 호감을 창출할 것으로 보인다.
신데렐라를 기다리는 유리구두
얼핏 윌.아이.엠의 도로 주행성 래핑과 산타나의 기타 라인이 조화를 이루지 못하는 것 아닌가 조금은 우려 되었지만 막상 들어보면 그의 기타는 어떤 스타일의 곡과도 무난한 어울림을 빚어낸다는 것을 웅변하고 있다. 클라이브 데이비스와 산타나가 신보의 곡들을 ‘신데렐라를 기다리는 유리구두’라고 일컫는 것도 이해가 된다. 신데렐라의 발만이 유리구두에 맞듯 산타나의 기타만이 상대의 노래와 곡조와 어울린다는 것이다.
세기 말 세기 초의 기념비적인 곡 “Smooth”에 가장 닮아있는 보 바이스의 “Brown Skin Girl”도 바로 그 점에서 애청이 유망한 곡이다. 메리 제이 블라이지의 카리스마가 여전한 “My Man”, 조스 스톤의 소울 보이스가 이제는 대중과 친숙해졌음을 선포하는 듯한 “Cry Baby Cry”는 산타나의 음악과 신세대 힙합과의 접점 지역이 점점 넓어지고 있음을 말해준다. 하긴 힙합은 어떤 면에서 아프리칸 펑크나 다름없다.
가장 라틴적인 곡은 아무래도 라틴 그룹 로스 론리 보이스의 “I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love”이며, 초보 청취자들도 커크 해밋의 기타가 산타나와 색감이 전혀 다르면서도 충분히 밸런스를 유지하고 있음을 알 수 있는 인스트루멘털 넘버 “Trinity”도 매력적이다. 피쳐링이 없는 나머지 4곡의 노래는 산타나 밴드의 전속 보컬 앤디 가르시아(Andy Garcia)가 맡았다. 이 모든 곡을 관통하는 것은 ‘언제 들어도 어디서 들어도 어느 곡을 들어도’ 확실한 그 기타 톤이다. 각각의 곡들이 아무리 달라도, 그 결과물이 아무리 다양해도 이 앨범이 결국은 ‘산타나 앨범’이 되고 마는 건 바로 그것 때문이다.
로맨틱한 라틴 발라드든, 아프리칸 펑크든 왜 그의 기타를 들으면 그가 좋은 사람이란 생각이 드는 걸까. 그만이 누리는 특전이다. 그러니 우리는 그저 안심하고 “Con Santana(콘 산타나)”의 곡목대로 ‘산타나와 함께’ 하기만 하면 된다. 멋진 완결, 역시 거장다운 대미 장식이다. 무엇보다 공연 현장에서 다시 듣고 싶은 욕구를 부채질하는 앨범이다. 산타나가 바라는 그대로다. 그가 다시 한국에 왔으면 좋겠다. 벌써 내한한 지 10년이 다 되어간다.
