INTRODUCTION
2004년 3월 한국 공연을 대성황리에 마친 이후 디사운드는 바쁜 일정을 보냈다. 밴드의 네 번째 음반 [Doubleharted]를 홍콩에서 발매했고, 그 해 7월에는 독일에서 싱글 <I Just Can't Wait>을 선보였다. 보컬인 시모네가 독일 출신이기 때문일까, 독일 언론들은 디사운드에게 큰 관심을 나타냈다. 여성 잡지 ‘Jolie’는 밴드를 인터뷰했고 MTV는 프로그램 출연을 요청했다. 이런 호응에 힘입어 디사운드는 싱글에 이어 정규 앨범 [Doubleharted]를 독일에서 발표했고 10월에는 독일 팬들과 직접 만나는 라이브 공연도 가졌다. 독일과의 인연은 이후에도 계속 되었다. 애시드 재즈 밴드 인코그니토(Incognito)가 2005년 봄의 독일 투어에 디사운드를 게스트로 초대한 것이다. 디사운드는 인코그니토와 다섯 번의 무대를 펼쳤다. 그리고 킴과 조니는 노르웨이 신인 뮤지션의 음반을 프로듀싱했고 시모네는 자신의 첫 솔로 앨범 [Last Days and Nights]를 제작했다.
그리고 2005년 8월, 세 멤버는 새 음반 녹음을 위해 노르웨이 수도 오슬로(Oslo)에서 가장 긴 역사를 자랑하는 스튜디오에 모였다. 시모네, 킴, 조니가 원했던 사운드는 12년 전, 밴드가 막 활동을 시작하던 디사운드 창세기 때의 선율이었다. 그래서 그때 함께 활동했던 키보디스트 스타인 에우스트루드(Stein Austrud)와 기타리스트 베르게 페테르센 외벨레이르(Børge Pettersen Øverleir) 와 함께 녹음 작업을 했다. 작업은 일사천리로 이뤄졌고 디사운드는 열흘 만에 모든 녹음을 마쳤다. 그리고 완성된 곡 중 12곡을 골라 다섯 번째 앨범을 만들었다.
새 앨범은 폭넓은 스펙트럼을 자랑한다. <1,2,3>같이 박력 넘치는 넘버가 있는가 하면 <Murder Me>처럼 차분한 작품도 있다. 히트곡 <Do I Need A Reason>을 좋아한 팬이라면 멜로디 라인이 살아있는 발라드 <Gaining Back My Faith>와 <As Long As I Sing>이 반가울 것이다. 다른 밴드와 차별되는 디사운드만의 특징인 재즈 풍의 그루브는 이번 앨범에도 건재하다. 다양한 추종자를 낳았지만 결코 복제되지 않는 디사운드표 ‘경쾌 꿍짝’ 리듬은 <Green Eyes>, <My Today> 그리고 <Rainy Days>에서 확인할 수 있다.
멤버들은 이번 앨범이 ‘Good Old D’SOUND’를 원하는 팬들에게 좋은 선물이 될 것이라고 했다. 하지만 이 말은 초심을 잃지 않겠다는 멤버들의 다짐으로 받아들여야 할 것 같다. 이들은 이제 오슬로의 작은 클럽에서 공연하던 그 삼인조가 아니다. 스칸디나비아를 넘어 유럽, 아시아 지역에 까지 팬을 거느린 수퍼 트리오로 성장한 것이다. 그리고 새 음반은 세계적인 밴드라는 지위에 어울리는 세련미를 갖추고 있다. 멤버들의 기량은 물이 오를 대로 올랐고 곡의 구성은 잘 짜인 비단처럼 매끄럽고 윤기가 있다.
기술적 거대주의나 무차별적인 힙합의 세례를 받지 않은 이들의 사운드는 무리 없이 자연스럽게 진행된다. 라이브와 별반 다르지 않은 멜로디 전개는 귀에 거슬리지 않는 ‘친생활 사운드’로 다가와 우리의 단조로운 일상에 즐거운 쉼표를 찍어준다. 호모 사피엔스의 품위 있는 시간을 누리게 해주는 것이다. 이런 이유로 디사운드는 항상 강렬한 조명 아래 머물러야 한다. 언젠가는 그늘로 이동하는 날이 오겠지만 그것은 아주 먼 미래의 일이다.
