Within the fire and out upon the sea
Crazy Man Michael was walking He met with a raven with eyes black as coals And shortly they were a-talking "Your future, your future, I would tell to you Your future, you often have asked me Your true love will die by your own right hand And Crazy Man Michael will cursed be" Michael he ranted and Michael he raved And beat at the four winds with his fists-oh He laughed and he cried, he shouted and he swore For his mad mind had trapped him with a kiss-oh "You speak with an evil, you speak with a hate You speak for the devil that haunts me For is she not the fairest in all the broad land? Your sorceror's words are to taunt me" He took out his dagger of fire and of steel And struck down the raven through the heart-oh The bird fluttered long and the sky it did spin And the cold earth did wonder and start-oh "Oh, where is the raven that I struck down dead That here'd lie on the ground-oh? I see but my true love with a wound so red" Her lover's heart it did pound-oh Crazy Man Michael, he wanders and walks And talks to the night and the day-oh But his eyes they are sane and his speech it is clear And he longs to be far away-oh Michael he whistles the simplest of tunes And asks the wild woods their pardon For his true love is flown into every flower grown And he must be keeper of the garden |

My father he rides in your ships
And I know he would never mean harm But to see both sides of a quarrel Is to judge without hate or love Oh, oh, helpless and slow And you don't have anywhere to go You take away homes from the homeless And leave them to die in the cold The gypsy who begged for your presents He will laugh in your face when you're old Oh, oh, helpless and slow And you don't have anywhere to go Well, one man he drinks up his whiskey Another he drinks up his wine And they'll drink till their eyes are red with hate For those of a different kind Oh, oh, helpless and slow And you don't have anywhere to go When the rivers run thicker than trouble I'll be there at your side in the flood It was all I could do to keep myself >From taking revenge of blood Oh, oh, helpless and slow And you don't have anywhere to go Oh, oh, helpless and slow And you don't have anywhere to go |

As I was a-walking down Radcliffe highway
A recruiting party came a-beating my way They enlisted me and treated me till I did not know And to the Queen's barracks they forced me to go When first I deserted, I thought myself free Until my cruel comrade informed against me I was quickly followed after and brought back with speed I was handcuffed and guarded, heavy irons put on me Court martial, court martial, they help upon me And the sentence passed upon me, three hundred and three May the Lord have mercy on them for their sad cruelty For now the Queen's duty lies heavy on me When next I deserted, I thought myself free Until my cruel sweetheart informed against me I was quickly followed after and brought back with speed I was handcuffed and guarded, heavy irons put on me Court martial, court martial, then quickly was got And the sentence passed upon me, that I was to be shot May the Lord have mercy on them for their sad cruelty For now the Queen's duty lies heavy on me Then up rode Prince Albert in his carriage and sticks Saying "Where is that young man whose coffin is fixed? Set him free from his irons and let him go free For he'll make a good soldier for his Queen and country |

The Hiring Fair
(Ralph McTell) Well, I went down to the hiring fair for to sell my labour. I noticed a maid in the very next row and I hoped she'd be my neighbour. Imagine then my delight when the farmer picked us both. I spoke not a word on the cart to the farm, but my heart beat in my throat. Well, my lodgings were dry and my master fair, and I gave him full measure. But my envy grew like the corn in the field, for in his house was my treasure. I'd watch her carry water or drive cows from the byre, And the heat from the sun made the corn grow strong, and with it my desire. Well, I'd see her in my dreaming, and in my dreams caress Her eyes, her lips, and her dark brown hair, the curves beneath her dress. When harvest time it came at last, so heavy was the task, That the women and the men worked side by side, and I had her near at last. So I swung harder with my scythe. Few words between us passed. And I cursed my tongue-tied youthfulness and hoped that she'd hear my heart. When all was safely gathered in, and we sat down to rest, My trembling fingers touched her arm and she placed them on her breast. And then she turned to me as the sun went down, and all my senses reeled, As we lay there on the scented ground and the moon rose over the field. Hmmm.... Well she was safely gathered in my arms when from the barn Drifted the sound of a violin and we hurried back to the farm. And all were dancing in the lantern light and music filled the air, And I thanked my stars for the harvest moon and the girl from the hiring fair. And all were dancing in the lantern light and music filled the air, And I thanked my stars for the harvest moon and the girl from the hiring fair. |
