바야흐로, 대세는 힙합인 것처럼 보인다. 그렇지만, 여전히 꽤 많은 사람들에게 힙합하면 전혀 알아들을 수 없는 랩이 속사포처럼 터져나오는 음악 아닌 음악처럼 여겨질 뿐이다. 힙합 중에서도 멜로디컬하며 귀에 속 들어오는 그런 힙합 없을까... 왜 없겠는가. 소위 재즈 샘플들-혹은 리얼 밴드의 연주-로 이루어진 재즈 힙합(A.K.A. Jazz-Hop)이 그것이다. 재즈 힙합하면 자연스럽게 떠올리는 이름 ‘Sound Providers (사운드 프로바이더스)’의 “Looking Backwards:2001-1998”이 파스텔 뮤직을 통해 국내에 정식으로 발매된다.
브랜드 누비앙(Brand Nubian), 트라이브 콜드 퀘스트(A Tribe Called Quest) 그리고 루츠 (The Roots)를 필두로 불기 시작했던 재즈 힙합의 열풍은 2000년대에 이르러 사운드 프로바이더스(Sound Providers)라는 미국 언더 힙합의 실력자들로 이어지게 된다. 미국뿐 아니라 일본에서 메가 히트를 기록하며, 전세계적으로 유명해지기 시작한 이들은 제이슨 스킬즈(Jason Kills) 와 솔로(Soulo)로, 두 사람 모두 힙합퍼 중에는 드물게 백인이다. 힙합이라면 고개를 절레 절레 내두르는 사람들에게도 듣는 순간 미묘한 끌림을 선사하는 이들의 음악은 재즈와 리얼 연주의 기반으로 한 멜로디컬한 리듬이 특징이다. 이미 국내에도 다수의 팬을 형성하고 있으며, 2004년 첫 번째 정규앨범 <An Evening with the Sound Providers>은 파스텔 뮤직을 통해 수입 음반으로만 국내에 유통되었는데, 단일 음반으로는 기록적인 판매고를 올리며 단순에 국내의 모든 힙합 리스너들의 교과서가 되었다. 2004년 정규 앨범의 발매는 평단과 팬들의 지지를 한 몸에 받으며 단순에 전세계적으로의 유명하게 된 계기가 되었다.
첫 번째 정규앨범은 많은 사람들의 마음이 쏙 들 정도의 퀄리티와 판매고를 올렸으나, 여전히 모자란 부분이 있었으니, 4년여간 이들의 발표해 온 주옥과 같은 싱글트랙들이 바로 그것이다. 특히나, 언더 그라운드 클래식으로 불리우는 ‘The Field’ 의 부재는 많은 리스너들에게 아쉬움을 안겨주었다. 이에 전세계의 수많은 팬들이 4년간의 싱글 모음집을 앨범으로 발매하라는 염원이 전해졌고, 드디어 “Looking Backwards:2001-1998” 이라는 제목을 가지고 올해 초 앨범 발매에 이른다.
특히, 앞서 언급된 3번 트랙 ‘The Field’ 는 가장 성공한 싱글로 언더그라운드 클래식으로 불리우는 트랙이다. 역시 이들이 첫 번째 발매했던 12인치에 수록됐으며, 따뜻하고 빈티지한 기타 샘플이 단순하지만 긴 여운을 남긴다.

2004년 이들이 첫번째 앨범을 발표했을때 사람들이 가졌던 의문은 왜 그 동안 릴리즈 했었던 수많은 12인치 싱글들의 곡을 거의 수록하지 않았느냐는 것이었다. 물론 MC 프로파일의 탈퇴도 이유가 될 수 있겠지만 무엇보다도 그들의 미칠듯한 창작욕구로 인해 새로운 비트들이 넘쳐났기 때문이라고 해석되기도 했다. 결국 그들은 이전 자신들이 발표했던 12인치 싱글들을 다시 마스터링하여 CD로 발매할 계획을 갖게 되고 현재 당신이 들고 있는 씨디가 바로 그것이다. 이들의 초기 4년의 작업물을 담고 있는 본작은 단순한 싱글 모음집이라기 보다는 진정한 의미의 데뷔 앨범, 베스트 음반이나 다름없다. 그 동안 힙합씬의 클래식으로 회자됐던 여러 싱글들과 이들이 가장 빛났던 3인 체제의 시기를 고스란히 담고 있는 앨범이기 때문이다. 단단한 소스와 기본에 충실한 샘플의 배치는 차분하고 가끔 멜랑꼴리한 정서마저 담고 있다. 가사는 대부분 긍정적인 내용을 담고 있고 쿨 재즈/이지 리스닝으로 이루어진 소스의 상쾌한 느낌, 그리고 MC 프로파일의 멜로우하고 대화하는 듯한 느낌의 엠씽 또한 감상의 재미를 더한다. 애시드 재즈의 신선함과 훌륭한 그루브의 조화로 인한 담백한 힙합 튠으로 넘실댄다.
미국만큼이나 일본에서 오히려 재즈힙합의 인기가 높다. 사실 이 앨범도 오히려 미국보다는 일본에서 먼저 발매가 되기도 했는데, 누자베스(Nujabes)같은 재즈힙합 프로듀서가 인기 만화영화의 사운드트랙을 담당하는가 하면 오히려 미국에서는 많은 인지도를 얻지 못하고 있는 크라운 시티 락커스같은 팀이 일본 후지록 페스티발의 중요한 시간대에 공연하는 일들로 미루어 볼 때 일본인들의 재즈 힙합에 대한 사랑은 각별한 것처럼 보인다. 일본의 경우 재즈 레코딩의 리마스터링 음반 카탈로그가 오히려 본국 보다도 많다고 한다. 도시바-EMI의 경우에도 거의 대부분의 블루노트 타이틀을 페이퍼 슬리브로 재발매 했으며 몇몇 레코딩은 오직 일본 내에서만 복각한 씨디를 찾아볼수 밖에 없는 것도 많다고 한다. 이러한 사례들이 일본이 재즈 힙합을 사랑하는 이유가 되는지는 알길이 없다만 좌우지간 이러한 과거의 보석같은 음원들의 재탄생은 바로 연금술사들(=비트 메이커/디거들)의 인내와 노력의 결과인 것이다 . 그들은 우리가 잊고 있었던 과거의 빈티지한 순간들을 캐치하여 다시 들려주고 있으며 이것은 충분히 가치있는 작업이라 하겠다. 이것은 나름대로 자신이 영향받았던 '예술의 재생산'의 방법일수도 있기 때문이다. .... ....
