It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair But her mummy is yelling 'No' And her daddy has told her to go But her friend is nowhere to be seen Now she walks through her sunken dream To the seat with the clearest view And she's hooked to the silver screen But the film is a saddening bore For she's lived it ten times or more She could spit in the eyes of fools As they ask her to focus on Sailors fighting in the dance hall Oh man! Look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show Take a look at the Lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars? It's on Amerika's tortured brow That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow Now the workers have struck for fame 'Cause Lennon's on sale again See the mice in their million hordes From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads Rule Britannia is out of bounds To my mother, my dog, and clowns But the film is a saddening bore 'Cause I wrote it ten times or more It's about to be writ again As I ask you to focus on Sailors fighting in the dance hall Oh man! Look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show Take a look at the Lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars? |

Roxanne, you don't have to put on the red light

You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie double four time You feel alright when you hear that music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Ah but the horns, they blowing that sound Way on down south, way on down south, London town You check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords Mind, he's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing Yes, and an old guitar is all he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the honky tonk like anything Saving it up for Friday night With the Sultans, with the Sultans of Swing And a crowd of young boys, they're fooling around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band It ain't what they call rock and roll Then the Sultans, yeah, the Sultans they play Creole Creole And then the man, he steps right up to the microphone And says at last, just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans, we are the Sultans of Swing" |

Pistol shots ring out in the barroom night
Enter Patty Valentine from the upper hall. She sees the bartender in a pool of blood, Cries out, "My God, they've killed them all!" Here comes the story of the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world. Three bodies lyin' there does Patty see And another man named Bello, movin' around mysteriously. "I didn't do it," he says, and he throws up his hands "I was only robbin' the register, I hope you understand. I saw them leavin'," he says, and he stops "One of us had better call up the cops." And so Patty calls the cops And they arrive on the scene with their red lights flashin' In the hot New Jersey night. Meanwhile, far away in another part of town Rubin Carter and a couple of friends are drivin' around. Number one contender for the middleweight crown Had no idea what kinda shit was about to go down When a cop pulled him over to the side of the road Just like the time before and the time before that. In Paterson that's just the way things go. If you're black you might as well not show up on the street 'Less you wanna draw the heat. Alfred Bello had a partner and he had a rap for the cops. Him and Arthur Dexter Bradley were just out prowlin' around He said, "I saw two men runnin' out, they looked like middleweights They jumped into a white car with out-of-state plates." And Miss Patty Valentine just nodded her head. Cop said, "Wait a minute, boys, this one's not dead" So they took him to the infirmary And though this man could hardly see They told him that he could identify the guilty men. Four in the mornin' and they haul Rubin in, Take him to the hospital and they bring him upstairs. The wounded man looks up through his one dyin' eye Says, "Wha'd you bring him in here for? He ain't the guy!" Yes, here's the story of the Hurricane, The man the authorities came to blame For somethin' that he never done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world. Four months later, the ghettos are in flame, Rubin's in South America, fightin' for his name While Arthur Dexter Bradley's still in the robbery game And the cops are puttin' the screws to him, lookin' for somebody to blame. "Remember that murder that happened in a bar? Remember you said you saw the getaway car? You think you'd like to play ball with the law? Think it might-a been that fighter that you saw runnin' that night? Don't forget that you are white." Arthur Dexter Bradley said, "I'm really not sure." Cops said, "A poor boy like you could use a break We got you for the motel job and we're talkin' to your friend Bello Now you don't wanta have to go back to jail, be a nice fellow. You'll be doin' society a favor. That sonofabitch is brave and gettin' braver. We want to put his ass in stir We want to pin this triple murder on him He ain't no Gentleman Jim." Rubin could take a man out with just one punch But he never did like to talk about it all that much. It's my work, he'd say, and I do it for pay And when it's over I'd just as soon go on my way Up to some paradise Where the trout streams flow and the air is nice And ride a horse along a trail. But then they took him to the jail house Where they try to turn a man into a mouse. All of Rubin's cards were marked in advance The trial was a pig-circus, he never had a chance. The judge made Rubin's witnesses drunkards from the slums To the white folks who watched he was a revolutionary bum And to the black folks he was just a crazy nigger. No one doubted that he pulled the trigger. And though they could not produce the gun, The D.A. said he was the one who did the deed And the all-white jury agreed. Rubin Carter was falsely tried. The crime was murder one, guess who testified? Bello and Bradley and they both baldly lied And the newspapers, they all went along for the ride. How can the life of such a man Be in the palm of some fool's hand? To see him obviously framed Couldn't help but make me feel ashamed to live in a land Where justice is a game. Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell An innocent man in a living hell. Yes, that's the story of the Hurricane, But it won't be over till they clear his name And give him back the time he's done. Put in a prison cell, but one time he could-a been The champion of the world. |

Oh, I'm being followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land, Oh if I ever lose my hands, oh if.... I wont have to work no more. And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colors all run dry, Yes if I ever lose my eyes, oh if.... I wont have to cry no more. Oh, I'm being followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my legs, I wont moan, and I wont beg, Yes if I ever lose my legs, oh if.... I wont have to walk no more. And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south, Yes if I ever lose my mouth, oh if.... I wont have to talk... Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night? Oh, I'm being followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow |

I hear him
before I go to sleep and focus on the day that's been. I realize he's there when I turn the light off and turn over. Nobody knows about my man. They think he's lost on some horizon. And suddenly I find myself listening to a man I've never known before, telling me about the sea, oh his love is to eternity. Ooh he's here again, the man with the child in his eyes. Ooh he's here again, the man with the child in his eyes. He's very understanding and he's so aware of all my situations. When I stay up late he's always with me what I feel when I hesitate. Oh I'm so worried about my love. They say "no, no it won't last forever". And here I am again my girl, wondering what on earth I am doing here. Maybe he doesn't love me, I just took a trip on my love for him. Ooh he's here again, the man with the child in his eyes. Ooh he's here again, the man with the child in his eyes. |

Who draws the crowd and plays so loud,
Baby it's the guitar man. Who's gonna steal the show, you know Baby it's the guitar man, He can make you love, he can make you cry He will bring you down, then he'll get you high Somethin' keeps him goin', miles and miles a day To find another place to play. Night after night who treats you right, Baby it's the guitar man Who's on the radio, you go listen To the guitar man Then he comes to town, and you see his face, And you think you might like to take his place Somethin' keeps him driftin' miles and miles away Searchin' for the songs to play. Then you listen to the music and you like to sing along, You want to get the meaning out of each and ev'ry song Then you find yourself a message and some words to call your own And take them home. Instrumental guitar He can make you love, he can get you high He will bring you down, then he'll make you cry Somethin' keeps him movin', but no one seems to know What it is that makes him go. Then the lights begin to flicker and the sound is getting dim The voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin But he never seems to notice he's just got to find Another place to play, Anyway got to play, anyway got to play. by blackbird |

I know a girl from a lonely street,
cold as ice cream, but still as sweet. Dry your eyes, sunday girl. Hey, I saw your guy with a different girl. Looks like he's in another world. Run and hide, sunday girl. Hurry up, hurry up and wait. I stay away all week and still I wait. I got the blues. Please come see what your lovin means to me. She can't catch up with the working crowd. The weekend mood and she's feeling proud. Live in dreams, sunday girl. Baby, I would like to go out tonight. If I go with you my folks'll get uptight. Stay at home, sunday girl. When I saw you again in the summer time, if your love was as sweet as mine, I could be sunday's girl. |

It's getting late have you seen my mates
Ma tell me when the boys get here It's seven o'clock and I want to rock Want to get a belly full of beer My old man's drunker than a barrel full of monkeys And my old lady she don't care My sister looks cute in her braces and boots A handful of grease in her hair Don't give us none of your aggravation We had it with your discipline Saturday night's alright for fighting Get a little action in Get about as oiled as a diesel train Gonna set this dance alight `Cause Saturday night's the night I like Saturday night's alright alright alright Well they're packed pretty tight in here tonight I'm looking for a dolly who'll see me right I may use a little muscle to get what I need I may sink a little drink and shout out "She's with me!" A couple of the sound that I really like Are the sounds of a switchblade and a motorbike I'm a juvenile product of the working class Whose best friend floats in the bottom of a glass |

We'll be fighting in the streets With our children at our feet And the morals that they worship will be gone And the men who spurred us on Sit in judgement of all wrong They decide and the shotgun sings the song I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again The change, it had to come We knew it all along We were liberated from the foe, that's all And the world looks just the same And history ain't changed 'Cause the banners, they'd all flown in the last war I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again No, no! I'll move myself and my family aside If we happen to be left half alive I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky For I know that the hypnotized never lie Do ya? Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! There's nothing in the street Looks any different to me And the slogans are out-phased, by-the-bye And the party on the left Is now party on the right And their beards have all grown longer overnight I'll tip my hat to the new constitution Take a bow for the new revolution Smile and grin at the change all around Pick up my guitar and play Just like yesterday Then I'll get on my knees and pray We don't get fooled again Don't get fooled again No, no! Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Meet the new boss Same as the old boss |

Big wheels keep on turning,
Carry me home to see my kin Singing songs about the southland. I miss ole bamy once again and I think it's a sin. Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her. Well, I heard ole Neil put her down. Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don't need him around anyhow. * Sweet home Alabama where the skies are so blue. Sweet home Alabama, Lord, I'm coming home to you. In Birmingham they love the Gov'nor. Now we all did what we could do. Now Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscience bother you, tell the truth. Repeat * (Solo) Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers And they ve been known to pick a song or two. Lord, they get me off so much, They pick me up when I'm feeling blue, now how about you. When I was young
It seemed that life was so wonderful A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical And all the birds in the trees Well they'd be singing so happily Oh joyfully, oh playfully watching me But then they sent me away To teach me how to be sensible Logical, oh responsible, practical And then they showed me a world Where I could be so dependable Oh clinical, oh intellectual, cynical There are times when all the world's asleep The questions run too deep For such a simple man Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd Please tell me who I am I say now watch what you say Or they'll be calling you a radical A liberal, oh fanatical, criminal Oh won't you sign up your name We'd like to feel you're acceptable Respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable Whoa (tick, tick, tick, yeah) But at night when all the world's asleep The questions run so deep For such a simple man Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned I know it sounds absurd But please tell me who I am, who I am, who I am, who I am |
