INTRODUCTION
펑크의 전성기 이후 이토록 과격하고 직설적인 분위기를 창출하는 밴드는 없었다. 스테랑코! 파워로 무장한 고품격 밴드라 할 수 있다. 스테랑코는 런던 남서부 지역을 중심으로 지난 몇 년간 영국을 비롯하여 미국, 아시아, 유럽 등지에서 1집 앨범 “Culturephrenia”를 홍보하며 활발한 공연을 펼쳐왔다. 폭풍 같은 거구의 보컬리스트 Lee Manga n을 중심으로 베이시스트 Lee Elvey의 땅을 울리는 베이스 사운드 및 치열한 기타, 그리고 John Barrett의 천둥 같은 드럼연주가 조화를 이뤄내고 있다. 이들의 라이브는 남극의 눈을 녹일 만큼 뜨거우며 관객을 정신 없는 소용돌이로 몰아가기 충분하다.
음악적으로 스테랑코는 어느 한 장르의 음악에 속하기를 거부한다. 그러나 전통 락음악의 고결함이 모든 곡 속에 녹아 있는 것을 눈치 챌 수 있다. 열광적인 첫 곡 “Nylon”에서 명백하게 드러나듯 이들의 신보 “Keepers of the Fallo”는 무자비하다고 할 수 있다. 첫 곡부터 이들은 21세기의 도시적인 분노를 표현하는 새로운 이정표를 만들어가고 있다는 느낌을 받는다. 마치 우리의 귀를 위한 그리고 현시대가 요구하는 “A Clockwork Orange(역자주: 스탠리 큐브릭 감독 영화)” 와 같은 음악을 들려준다.
새로 발표된 싱글인 “Burglar or Banker”는 돈은 나중에 갚고 우선 살고 보자는 메시지를 담은 곡으로써 한번이라도 누구에게 빚진 사람들이 공감할 수 있는 곡이다. “Keepers of the Fallo” 앨범은 마치 첫번째 Clash 앨범이 70년대 후반의 각종 문제를 신랄하게 비판했듯이 2009년의 병폐에 대한 신비로운 타임캡슐과도 같다. 이번 앨범에는 보컬리스트 Lee Mangan이 직접 뮤직비디오를 감독해 화제가 되기도 했다. Lee는 최근 런던과 뉴욕에 작품 전시회를 할 만큼 재능 있는 예술가로 명성을 쌓아가고 있다. Lee는 David Hockney와 Damien Hirst 등과 함께 영국왕실 경매에 참여하여 작품을 팔기도 했으며, 영화감독으로서의 데뷰작인 “R”은 최근 뉴욕국제영화제에서 상영되는 영예를 안았으며, 곧 베를린국제영화제에 출품될 예정이다. ....  ....
