피아노가 한국에 도착한 것은 피아노가 발명된 지 약 200년 후인 1900년이었다. 전해지는 이야기에 따르면, 1900년 3월, 영국 출신 ‘사이드 보텀’(한국 이름 사보담) 선교사에 의해 피아노가 들어왔고, 이 한국 최초의 피아노는 사문진 나루터에 도착했다. 배를 타고 한국에 도착한 이 피아노를 운반하기 위해, 조선의 여러 짐꾼이 상여를 메듯 어깨 위로 들어 올려 악기를 옮겼다. 당시 피아노를 처음 본 사람들은 통 안에서 알 수 없는 소리가 난다 하여 이를 ‘귀신통’이라 불렀다고 한다. 김재훈은 ‘귀신통’의 소리와 재료를 주제로 만든 두 곡을 통해 1900년과 2023년을 레이어링함과 동시에 피아노를 재료로 새롭게 만든 악기 ‘P.N.O(Prepared New Objects)’를 선보인다.

The piano arrived in Korea in 1900, about 200 years after its invention. According to the story, in March 1900, a piano arrived at Samunjin Ferry, the southern part of South Korea by Richard Sidebotham(Korean name: 사보담謝普淡Sabodam), a missionary from England. It was the first piano in the history of South Korea. After the piano arrived at the ferry by boat, several porters of Joseon lifted the unfamiliar instrument over their shoulders as if carrying a bier. At that time, people who saw the weird object for the first time called it ‘gwisintong’, which means ghost cabinet, since it made an unknown sound in the container. Jaehoon Kim layered the years 1900 and 2023 through two songs based on the sound and materials of ‘gwisintong’, while presenting ‘P.N.O(Prepared New Objects)’, a new musical instruments made from a piano.
