과대포장된 갱스터 [Get Rich or Die Trying]은 몇 주만에 백만 장 선을 가뿐하게 돌파하면서 엄청난 상업적 성공을 보여준 앨범이다. 하지만 닥터드레(Dr.dre)와 에미넴(Eminem)이 50센트(50 Cent)의 조력자라는 점을 본다면 이와 같은 성공 사례가 그리 놀랍지는 않다. 닥터드레와 에미넴의 네임밸류. 이미지 메이킹. 그리고 앨범 외적으로 알려진 50센트의 과거 사 생활. 이러한 요소들이 50 센트의 앨범을 화제작으로 만들어낸 양념거리라고 해도 틀리지는 않을 것이다. 실제로 미국 전 지역의 각 주에서 50센트의 신작 런칭 파티가 열렸다는 점은 이 앨범이 그 모습을 드러내기 전부터 얼마나 화제가 되었는가를 잘 보여준다. 앨범 외적인 화제와 함께 50센트는 음악적으로도 많은 이들의 찬...

에미넴이 메인스트림에서 부각될 수 있었던 가장 원초적인 이유는 닥터 드레가 [The Slim Shady EP]를 접했기 때문이다. 이는 그전까지 숨겨진 보석 같은 존재였던 그가 8miles를 넘어설 수 있는 거의 유일한 기회였으며 화이트 보이 성공기의 시작이었다. 그리고 이러한 인간승리적인 미담을 일회성으로 끝낼 수 없다는 듯 에미넴과 닥터드레의 합작으로 완성된 앨범이 바로 이번 50센트의 [Get Rich or Die Tryin']이다. 사실 50센트의 앨범을 준비하면서 에미넴과 닥터드레는 묘한 기분에 사로잡혔을 것이다. 에미넴은 50센트에게서 실력과 스타성은 준비되어 있었으나 성공의 끈을 잡지 못해 방황하던 과거 자신의 모습을 보았을 것이고, 닥터드레는 에미넴을 정상의 위치로 끌어 올려주던 때가 새삼 떠...
