Once I was young
Once I was smart Now I'm living on the edge of my nerves The things we said weren't quite so tough When we were young Well I'm burning I'm burning buildings I'm building...this time For the art of parties Under heavy weather The art of parties I'm burning...burning I'm living I'm living my life I'm living This time The wind blew through my hair Once I was young I'd shelter from the sun Once I was smart We lived on the strength of our nerves When we were young Well I'm burning I'm burning buildings I'm building...this time |

I'm winning In the heart of the bushland What do you do when things go wrong ? When the room is quiet
The daylight almost gone It seems there's something I should know Well I ought to leave but The rain it never stops And I have no particular place to go Just when I think I'm winning When I've broken every door The ghosts of my life Blow wilder than before Just when I thought I could not be stopped When my chance came to be king The ghosts of my life Blew wilder than the wind Well I'm feeling nervous And I find myself alone The simple life's no longer there Once I was so sure Now the doubt inside my mind Comes and goes but leads nowhere Just when I think I'm winning When I've broken every door The ghosts of my life Blow wilder than before Just when I thought I could not be stopped When my chance came to be king The ghosts of my life Blew wilder than the wind |

Sometimes the comfort of a room
Sometimes I'm quite alone I pack to leave a foreign town It seems I'll never know But I'll rent new accommodation We'll make plans for mobile homes Slow boats moving with the tide Drifting far from shore It's the nature of this country life I've never known before Still we'll make plans for buildings and houses From mobile homes Plant life My life Still life in mobile homes Plant life My life Still life in mobile homes The sound of wildlife fills the air So warm and dry The bushland burns in this southern heat Like an open fire Still we'll make plans for buildings and houses From mobile homes...mobile homes Plant life My life Still life in mobile homes Blood life My life Still life in mobile homes A voice screams from heaven As we start to sail It's the calling of the fatherland I used to know so well 'Til I'll find new accommodation We'll make plans for mobile homes Plant life My life Still life in mobile homes Plant life My life Still life in mobile homes |

Sometime ago Sometimes we sense the doubt together Sometimes alone I'm tired but we won't sleep at all even though the air is calm Something here and something warm something cuts the scars inside tonight Sons of pioneers are hungry men Every voice I hear sounds so familiar Every song I know Still there's been no change in the weather But sometime we'll have to go I'm tired but we won't sleep at all even though the air is calm Something here and something warm something cuts the scars inside tonight Sons of pioneers are hungry men |

from Porcupine Tree, Porcupine Tree 6집 - Lightblub Sun (2000)
The quickest album we ever made (in 3 months flat and within only a few months of the release of the previous one) and we all feel our best work to date. Although superficially it seems to be a continuation of "Stupid Dream" it is a much more intense work - possibly less immediate, but ultimately more rewarding. Lyrically I arrived at a point where I was no longer interested in writing about abstract concepts like war, religion, space...etc... These are very personal and emotionally raw songs. It took me a long time to have the confidence and experience to be able to write them and some of them are dripping with negative emotions (Hatesong and Feel So Low particularly). Feel So Low pleased me a lot as I resisted the temptation to refine the original stream of consciousness words and left the nerve ends dangling. Musically we wanted to bring back some of the experimental aspects that had been to some degree lost on "Stupid Dream". Richard and I worked on creating some unique keyboard sounds for the album - e.g. the "fairground" on "How is Your Life Today ?" and the "insects" at the end of "Russia On Ice". There was also an influence from industrial and metal music coming through (we'd all been listening to Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile") - for example part of the beauty of the guitar solo on Where We Would Be (my favourite solo of mine to date) comes from the fact that it was played relatively straight but then fed through so many distortion and lo-fi processes that it began to fizz and disintegrate. The riffing guitars on Russia On Ice are pure metal and one of the solos of Hatesong I call my "Korn solo" on account of the fact that the bottom strings on the guitar are tuned down so low that the notes can be bent several tones. On the other hand there is a whole set of songs where the pastoral sound of long-gone English summers exerts it's influence on me (not for the first time). In a song like "Winding Shot" there are shades of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Nick Drake, although the end result is hopefully pure Porcupine Tree. This effect is accentuated by the fact that many of the instruments and vocals on the album are much more up front and given less of a sheen than on "Stupid Dream" (where the "stadium" production is I think the weakest aspect). Organic is the word I like to use. As we had on "Stupid Dream" we expanded our musical colours to include things like banjo, hammered dulcimer, the string arrangements of Dave Gregory and several African and Morrocan instruments that Colin brought back from his travels. To date it's the only album we've made that I still rated highly by the time we'd finished it - even the B-sides and leftovers seemed too good not to be on an album, but we were determined to keep the album below the one hour mark. The only point of contention was the inclusion of the song "The Rest Will Flow". Some of the band didn't really want it on the record, but it sounded so much like possible single that it seemed perverse not to include it. Favourite tracks - "How is Your Life Today ?", "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth..." and "Feel So Low" (plus most of the others to be honest). Steven Wilson Although it appears to be a continuation of sorts from "Stupid Dream" there are quite obvious differences as well. Certainly on the production side there is a more intense and upfront sound apparent. Also parts of the arrangements are stripped down to the bare essentials. Steven's lyrics became more personal and less ambiguous and so the arrangements by definition became more stripped down and more direct. Much of my keyboard experimenting took place on tracks like "Russia On Ice", "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth...", "Feel so Low" and "4 Chords That Made a Million"", while other tracks didn't seem to need a great deal of keyboards. I'm not one for playing all over a track if I can't see a genuine need for it. For me this album has an honesty and emotion that places it above all the other Porcupine Tree albums, although I would also say that not every track is as strong as some individual tracks on past albums. My favourites are "Russia On Ice" and "Feel So Low". Richard Barbieri |

Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out Was a song? Arriving somewhere but not here [Chorus:] All my designs, simplified And all of my plans, compromised And all of my dreams, sacrificed Ever had the feeling you've been here before? Drinking down the poison the way you were taught Ever thought from here on in your life begins And all you knew was wrong? Arriving somewhere but not here All my designs, simplified And all of my plans, compromised And all of my dreams... Did you see the redness block your part? Did the scissors cut a way to your heart? A compromise I never planned Unravel out the finest trends And I'm looking at a blank page now Should have filled it up with words somehow I whispered something in her ear I'd bear my soul but she don't hear The scratching of a mellotron It always seemed to make her cry Well maybe she remembers us collecting space up in the sky The scratching of a mellotron It always seemed to make her cry (Nothing rises from ? fingertips, heart it slips) I lay her gently on my clove She will leave me, yes I know And I'm looking at a blank page now Should have filled it up with words somehow The scratching of a mellotron It always seemed to make her cry Well maybe she remembers us collecting space up in the sky The scratching of a mellotron It always seemed to make her cry (Nothing rises from ? fingertips, heart it slips) Well maybe she remembers us collecting space up in the sky (Nothing rises from ? fingertips, heart it slips) Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down Don't look back into Don't let the memory or the sound drag you down |

Nothing like this
Felt in her kiss Cannot resist her Fell for her charm ? her arms I keep a photograph Give me a glimpse Let me come in Be there inside her Here it begins Here is the sin Something to lie about You think you're smart I think you art We agree on this It doesn't work Feeling like dirt Feeling like you don't care We get a room And in her gloom She lights a cigarette Clothes on the bed "Love me," she said I loose myself to her I'm getting feelings I'm hiding too well Bury the heart-shaped shell Something broke inside my stomach I let the pieces lie just where they fell Being with you is hell Hair blown in an open car Summer dress slips down her arm Hair blown in an open car Okay what's next? After the sex What do we do now? Finding the time Drawing the line And never crossing it Gave her the hours Gave her the power Cannont erase her Gave her the truth Gave her the proof I gave her everything I'm getting feelings I'm hiding too well Bury the heart-shaped shell (I had the feelings [inaudible]) Something broke inside my stomach I let the pieces lie just where they fell (I left the pieces where they fell) Being with you is hell Hair blown in an open car Summer dress slips down her arm Hair blown in an open car On a drive out to the mall Hair blown in an open car Hair blown in an open car Summer dress slips down your arm Hair blown in an open car |

You move in waves You never retrace Your newest craze Straight out of the Face by the bed unread I'm left behind Like all the others Some fall for you It doesn't make much difference if they do She changes every time you look By summer it was all gone - now she's moved on She called you every other day So savour it it's all gone - now she's moved on So for a while Everything seemed new Did we connect ? Or was it all just biding time for you ? |

Sometimes I feel I've been here forever
Sometime ago Sometimes we sense the doubt together Sometimes alone I'm tired but we won't sleep at all even though the air is calm Something here and something warm something cuts the scars inside tonight Sons of pioneers are hungry men Every voice I hear sounds so familiar Every song I know Still there's been no change in the weather But sometime we'll have to go I'm tired but we won't sleep at all even though the air is calm Something here and something warm something cuts the scars inside tonight Sons of pioneers are hungry men |

Could I ever explain
This feeling of love it just lingers on The fear in my heart that keeps telling me which way to turn We'll wander again Our clothes they are wet We shy from the rain Longing to touch all the places we know we can hide The width of a room that can hold so much pleasure inside Here am I alone again A quiet town where life begins Here am I just wondering Nightporters go Nightporters slip away I'll watch for a sign And if I should ever again cross your mind I'll sit in my room and wait until nightlife begins I'm catching my breath We'll both brave the weather again Here am I alone again A quiet town where life gives in Here am I just wondering Nightporters go Nightporters slip away |

It's a new design
The cut and style you know so well Spins across the floor It's the same routine Just one last word before you go Why should I ask for more? Then out of the blue you're here by me Moving Taking my chance Learning Methods of dance It's such as price to pay You sense the doubt inside my mind But never ask me why No second chances now I could be sure if I were to live at your speed of life Then out of the blue you're here by me Moving Taking my chance Learning Methods of dance Oh, oh, oh Methods of dance |

Boys, now the times are changing
The going could get rough Boys, would that ever cross your mind Boys, are you contemplating Moving out somewhere Boys, will you ever find the time? Here we are stranded Somehow it seems the same, beware. Here comes the quiet life again? Boys, now the country's only miles away from here Boys, do you recognise the signs? Boys, when those driving hands push against the tracks Boys, it's too late to wonder why Here we are stranded Somehow it seems the same, beware. Here comes the quiet life again? As you turn to leave Never looking back Will you think of me? Will you ever, could it ever stop? |

Sometime in the future the boy goes wild And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy A walk in the woods and I will try Something under the trees that made you cry It's so erotic when your make-up runs I got wiring loose inside my head I got books that I never ever read I got secrets in my garden shed I got a scar where all my urges bled I got people underneath my bed I got a place where all my dreams are dead Swim with me into your blackest eyes A few minutes with me inside my van Should be so beautiful if we can I'm feeling something taking over me |

Of myself Not much to conceal I'm saying nothing But I'm saying Nothing with feel I simply am not here No way I... To all tomorrow's parties A hand-me-down dress from who knows where To all tomorrow's parties Where will she go What shall she do When midnight comes around She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown And cry behind the door And what costume shall the poor girl wear To all tomorrow's parties The silken trimmings of yesterday's gown To all tomorrow's parties What shall she do With Thursday's rags When Monday comes around She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown And cry behind the door And what costume shall the poor girl wear To all tomorrow's parties Thursday's child is Sunday's clown From whom no-one ever borrows A blackened shroud A hand-me-down gown of rags and silks her costume Fit for one who sits and cries For all tomorrow's parties |

Everything's neat and compact
There's not much to shout about But winter is breaking inside of me Now life is so incomplete But you're one of the boys again But is that all you want to be? Now that you feel the weather Was it all in vain? Now that we're together We seem so alien Slowly descend from heaven Anyway we turn we win But how can you always be so sure? Nightporters sleep on weekdays Living a lifetime too Walking away without a cure Now that you feel the weather Was it all in vain? Now that we're together We seem so alien The noise on the stairs disturbs me Somebody walks my way But can you rely on everything I feel? Driving through endless buildings The desert is so serene But Mondays were never really my ideal Now that you feel the weather Was it all in vain? Now that we're together We seem so alien |

The cottage is windswept
Now there's only sorrow here Follow evacuation signs You're detached and broken and so sentimental now Remembering how we passed our time Somebody waits for me Far beyond our halloween Germanic forces marching on concrete squares Our love is just defenceless sound And could we believe that all you said was true We would be so determined now Slowly emerging Dividing Germany Everyone's lost in East Berlin Only believing just what you want to hear We're waiting at stations once again |

Flirting new ambition
Pressure for the ceiling No vacation on immaculate times Domestic training A woman's intuition A love is churning out on factory lines Health demanding Unfit behaviour Commuters converse in satirical signs Know no news and no personnel crisis With new indifferent industrial crimes Welcome to suburban Berlin Welcome to suburban Berlin Love affairs And endless strategies I don't believe in a word they said City limits No more information Go follow navigation in your head Welcome to suburban Berlin Welcome to suburban Berlin |

She keeps her patience for the bedroom
Should satisfy her for a week Her domination is executed cheaply With her studio technique What's new? She carries love in a carrier bag What's new? She don't keep her body clean Oh, Oh, Oh Illegitimate contributions And neurotic fantasies conceived Love is infectious I don't know about that Love is infectious I don't know about it She keeps appointments by the hour glass Guerilla warfare in her bed And constant love is oh oh so negative We're simulating sex instead She carries love in a carrier bag She don't keep her body clean Oh, Oh, Oh Illegitimate contributions And neurotic fantasies conceived Love is infectious I don't know about that Love is infectious I don't know about it No personality's essential Nobody strictly in command She's not direct, elusive Or inadequate Love's incompatible commands What's new? She carries love in a carrier bag What's new? She don't keep her body clean Oh, Oh, Oh Illegitimate contributions And neurotic heartaches are conceived Love is infectious I don't know about that Love is infectious I don't know about it |

A summerhouse in Texas
Searching for Siberia Pioneering underground We looked a lot like you Now work is done, the table set Deliver insufficient sound Oh my, fall in love with me Oh my, fall in love with me Cross military lines Nobody would believe us now The weather working with us We looked a lot like you Now every boy's a refugee Living for the moment Through the shrieking wails Trans-European overseas Silently leaving Amsterdam We looked a lot like you Shy away from standard life Each bitter moment lingers on |

The sidewalk's trading love
As subway lights grow brighter We're just another hype But the pressure's getting harder Get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up Take it much higher A lovers' etiquette Make love on first impression And adolescent sex with juvenile intentions Get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up Take it much higher Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Well, the lady buys a thrill Excitement in succession But a heartache won't partake In articulate obsession Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Oh yeah! Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Oh, well, pretty things at rest No courtesy surprising For love is heaven blessed All catastrophies denying Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Aw, when you're out on the street With your lovers infections Counting possibilities by elimination And your body's still damp From your one-room apartment And your heartache remains, when Love's not the antidote You'll submerge again Emerge again Just get off the street! Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Just keep on dancing Whatever gets you through the night Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher Get on up, get on up, get on up Take it much higher |

Scurrying across the broadwalk
Some places I tend to forget Echoings deep in my throat It's so cold in this luncheonette, well Somebody wants to know you An ordinary boy Somebody wants to know you A standard polaroid, well Here I am European son Sometimes the passenger European son Here I am Suffragettes in Washington Disposable serviettes Searching for the quiet life There's no love in this luncheonette, well |
