Degradation takes a soul potential
The woman ain't to blame Infiltrate the morning's passing hours But love remains the same I know I wish you were black But ain't no use you pretending She ain't ever coming back To put you on the right track All American humour With all American smile Love is on the horizon baby But no one can reply, well, well I know I wish you were black But ain't no use singing gospel She ain't ever coming back To put you on the right track Breezin, breezin, she's no lover Nobody's lover, babe She says: Breezin, breezin Satisfaction unrequired baby A ghetto in your heart Hoards of mass production baby Is keeping us apart I know I wish you were black But ain't no use singing gospel She ain't ever coming back To put you on the right track She puts you on the right track |

Tied - tied to a time When we knew that the sun would shine And you were all smiles And we could just talk for a while... Of where we would be when the future comes And how you would paint while I wrote my songs If I could find you And tell you about my life Or maybe just write And remind you of when we would dream... Of where we would be when the future comes And how you would paint while I wrote my songs Strange how you never become The person you see when you're young |

> So I got all these things, but so what?
In the end you can't take them with you You think you can save my soul? Well OK... Tell me, with all your conviction What happens now? Well I could be boarding an aircraft With a bomb concealed in somebody's briefcase And my body will spread through the heavens, across the sky And my ashes will fall through the cloudburst What happens now? What happens now? |

Out at the train tracks
I dream of escape But a song comes onto my iPod And I realize it's getting late And I can't take the staring And the sympathy And I don't like the questions "How do you feel?" "How's it going in school?" and "Do you wanna talk about it?" Way out Way out of here Fade out Fade out, vanish And I'm trying to forget you And I know that I will In a thousand years, or maybe a week Burn all your pictures, and cut out your face The shutters are down and the curtains are closed And I've covered my tracks Disposed of the car Trying to forget even your name and the way that you look When you're sleeping Dreaming of this Way out Way out of here Fade out Fade out, vanish |

Train set and match spied under the blind
Shiny and contoured the railway winds And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed The hiss of the train at the railway head Always the summers are slipping away A 60 ton angel falls to the earth A pile of old metal a radiant blur Scars in the country the summer and her Always the summers are slipping away Find me a way for making it stay When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide The hissing subsides I'm in luck When the evening reaches here You're tying me up I'm dying of love It's ok |

You move in waves You never retrace Your newest craze Straight out of the Face by the bed unread I'm left behind Like all the others Some fall for you It doesn't make much difference if they do She changes every time you look By summer it was all gone - now she's moved on She called you every other day So savour it it's all gone - now she's moved on So for a while Everything seemed new Did we connect ? Or was it all just biding time for you ? |

I don't remember
Did something in my past, create a hole. Don't use your gender. To drive a stake right through my soul. I live to function, On my own is all I know. No friends to mention, No destruction, nowhere to go Shallow, shallow, Give it to me, give into me Scissors cutting out your anger Shallow, shallow, No good to me, not if you bleed Bite your tongue ignore the splinter This city drains me, Maybe it's the smell of gasoline. The millions pain me, It's easier to talk to my PC. I live to function, On my own is all I know. No friends to mention, No destruction, nowhere to go Shallow, shallow, Give into me, give into me Seasons caught in a triangle, Shallow, shallow, No good to me, not if you bleed, Bite your tongue end on a splinter Shallow, shallow, Give into me, give into me Seasons caught in a triangle Shallow, shallow, No good to me, not if you bleed Bite your tongue end on a splinter |

And I don't want dependence It's no fun to be told That you can't blame your parents anymore I'm finding it hard To hang from a star Don't want to be Never want to be old Sullen and bored the kids stay And in this way they wish away each day… Stoned in the mall the kids play And in this way wish away each day… I don't really know If I care what is normal And I' m not really sure If the pills I've been taking are helping I'm wasting my life Hurting inside I don't really know And I'm not really sure Sullen and bored the kids stay And in this way they wish away each day… Stoned in the mall the kids play And in this way wish away each day… Sullen and bored the kids stay And in this way they wish away each day… Stoned in the mall the kids play And in this way wish away each day… |

Boys, now the times are changing
The going could get rough Boys, would that ever cross your mind Boys, are you contemplating Moving out somewhere Boys, will you ever find the time? Here we are stranded Somehow it seems the same, beware. Here comes the quiet life again? Boys, now the country's only miles away from here Boys, do you recognise the signs? Boys, when those driving hands push against the tracks Boys, it's too late to wonder why Here we are stranded Somehow it seems the same, beware. Here comes the quiet life again? As you turn to leave Never looking back Will you think of me? Will you ever, could it ever stop? |

Here is my car, my phone and my TV
I've got it all but you can see through me But am I here? It's kind of hard to tell I do a good impression of myself But what's normal now anyhow? Sullen and bored the kids stay And in this way they wish away each day Stoned in the mall the kids play And in this way they wish away each day Prescription drugs they help me through the day And that restraining order keeps me well at bay But what's normal now anyway? Sullen and bored the kids stay And in this way they wish away each day Stoned in the mall the kids play And in this way they wish away each day Wish I was old and a little sentimental You gotta see the waves, not the wine bottle. |

I could be wrong but I just slipped away from home Now I'm gone Well way down south having minor ups and downs And then moving on ahead in leaps and bounds Why, boy, they're playing our song outside where no-one can hear Why, boy, they're playing our song at the start of my new career Well it's a different walk of life That I've come to know because at every port of call comes a time to go Well they say down south the sun won't set on my hometown It's just driving in this heat that gets me down I could never hurt anyone Least of all you |

from Porcupine Tree, Porcupine Tree 6집 - Lightblub Sun (2000)
The quickest album we ever made (in 3 months flat and within only a few months of the release of the previous one) and we all feel our best work to date. Although superficially it seems to be a continuation of "Stupid Dream" it is a much more intense work - possibly less immediate, but ultimately more rewarding. Lyrically I arrived at a point where I was no longer interested in writing about abstract concepts like war, religion, space...etc... These are very personal and emotionally raw songs. It took me a long time to have the confidence and experience to be able to write them and some of them are dripping with negative emotions (Hatesong and Feel So Low particularly). Feel So Low pleased me a lot as I resisted the temptation to refine the original stream of consciousness words and left the nerve ends dangling. Musically we wanted to bring back some of the experimental aspects that had been to some degree lost on "Stupid Dream". Richard and I worked on creating some unique keyboard sounds for the album - e.g. the "fairground" on "How is Your Life Today ?" and the "insects" at the end of "Russia On Ice". There was also an influence from industrial and metal music coming through (we'd all been listening to Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile") - for example part of the beauty of the guitar solo on Where We Would Be (my favourite solo of mine to date) comes from the fact that it was played relatively straight but then fed through so many distortion and lo-fi processes that it began to fizz and disintegrate. The riffing guitars on Russia On Ice are pure metal and one of the solos of Hatesong I call my "Korn solo" on account of the fact that the bottom strings on the guitar are tuned down so low that the notes can be bent several tones. On the other hand there is a whole set of songs where the pastoral sound of long-gone English summers exerts it's influence on me (not for the first time). In a song like "Winding Shot" there are shades of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Nick Drake, although the end result is hopefully pure Porcupine Tree. This effect is accentuated by the fact that many of the instruments and vocals on the album are much more up front and given less of a sheen than on "Stupid Dream" (where the "stadium" production is I think the weakest aspect). Organic is the word I like to use. As we had on "Stupid Dream" we expanded our musical colours to include things like banjo, hammered dulcimer, the string arrangements of Dave Gregory and several African and Morrocan instruments that Colin brought back from his travels. To date it's the only album we've made that I still rated highly by the time we'd finished it - even the B-sides and leftovers seemed too good not to be on an album, but we were determined to keep the album below the one hour mark. The only point of contention was the inclusion of the song "The Rest Will Flow". Some of the band didn't really want it on the record, but it sounded so much like possible single that it seemed perverse not to include it. Favourite tracks - "How is Your Life Today ?", "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth..." and "Feel So Low" (plus most of the others to be honest). Steven Wilson Although it appears to be a continuation of sorts from "Stupid Dream" there are quite obvious differences as well. Certainly on the production side there is a more intense and upfront sound apparent. Also parts of the arrangements are stripped down to the bare essentials. Steven's lyrics became more personal and less ambiguous and so the arrangements by definition became more stripped down and more direct. Much of my keyboard experimenting took place on tracks like "Russia On Ice", "Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth...", "Feel so Low" and "4 Chords That Made a Million"", while other tracks didn't seem to need a great deal of keyboards. I'm not one for playing all over a track if I can't see a genuine need for it. For me this album has an honesty and emotion that places it above all the other Porcupine Tree albums, although I would also say that not every track is as strong as some individual tracks on past albums. My favourites are "Russia On Ice" and "Feel So Low". Richard Barbieri |

There's always something left inside him
I've really nothing much to lose It seems so sentimental Why should I care? Somewhere there's a sound of distant living Locked up in high society It seems so artificial Why should I care? Oh ho ho Life can be cruel Life in Tokyo Oh ho ho Life can be cruel Life in Tokyo Another vehicle heads for sunset No other providence will do They're only buildings and houses Why should I care Oh ho ho Life can be cruel Life in Tokyo Oh ho ho Life can be cruel Life in Tokyo |
