INTRODUCTION
만능 엔터테이너로의 변신 THE BODYGUARD ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK "1992"가수로서는 누구도 넘볼 수 없는 위치에 선 WHITNEY HOUSTON은 1992년 영화 "THE BODYGUARD"에 배우로 출연하며 새로운 영역에 도전장을 내밀었다. HOLLYWOOD의 대스타 CAVIN COSTNER와 함 께 공연한 이 영화는 영화 자체의 내용으로는 그닥 좋은 평가를 받지 못했지만 흥행에서는 대성공을 거두었다. 영화의 흥행성공과 맞물려 WHITNEY가 부른 6곡이 포함된 SOUNDTRACK ALBUM은 전 세계 팝 시장을 강타하며 선풍을 일으켰다. 이 앨범은 미국에서 발매 2달 만에 600만장이 넘는 판매고를 올리는 기록적인 판매량을 보였고, 첫 싱글로 발표된 WHITNEY의 'I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU'는 빌보드 싱글차트에서 14주 동안 1위를 차지하는 등 각종 차트의 정상을 모조리 휩쓸며 공전의 히트를 기록했다. "THE BODYGUARD SOUNDTRACK"은 빌보드 앨범차트에서 20주간이나 1위를 차지했고, 미국 내 판매량 1,700만장을 기록하며 90년대 미국에서 발표된 앨범 가운데 가장 많은 판매고를 올린 앨범이 되었으며, 전세계적으로 3,500만장 이상의 판매량을 보여 팝 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 영화 SOUNDTRACK ALBUM으로 기록되었다. 이러한 전 세계적인 열풍은 얼어 붙어 있던 우리나라 팝 시장도 순식간에 녹이며 이 앨범은 우리나라에서도 120만장이라는 엄청난 앨범 판매고를 올렸다. 1993년 한 해를 석권했던 WHITNEY HOUSTON은 이 앨범으로 각종 시상식에서 주요 상들을 독식했다. 1994년 2월에 열린 제 36회 GRAMMY AWARDS에서 'ALBUM OF THE YEAR'를 수상한 것을 비롯, 싱글 'I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU'로 'RECORD OF THE YEAR'와 '팝 부문 최우수 여성 보컬리스트상'을 수상하는 영예를 안았다. 또한 제 21회 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS에서는 무려 8개 부문의 상을 휩쓸며 한 해 최다 부문 수상의 기록을 세웠다.이 앨범의 이러한 폭발적인 성공은 누구나 공감할 수 있는 곡들을 고급스럽게 잘 포장한 결과였다.
