콜드플레이(Coldplay)는 1998년 영국 런던에서 결성된 얼터너티브 록 밴드다. 밴드의 멤버로는 그룹의 보컬이자 피아니스트, 또 기타리스트인 크리스 마틴과 리드 기타리스트 조니 버클랜드, 베이스에 가이 베리맨, 그리고 드러머와 기타 악기 연주로 윌 챔피언이 있다.
콜드플레이는 싱글앨범 Yellow를 냈을 때부터 세계적인 명성을 얻기 시작했으며, 직후 머큐리 상을 받은 그들의 데뷔 앨범 Parachutes를 2000년에 발표했다. 이후 2002년에 나온 다음 앨범 A Rush of Blood to the Head는 NME가 선정한 올해의 앨범상 등 여러 상을 받았다. 이후에 나온 앨범 X&Y는 2005년에 발표되었으며, 그전의 앨범만큼은 아니지만 상당한 호평을 받았다. 밴드의 네 번째 스튜디오 앨범인 Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends는 2008년 발표되었다. 이 앨범은 프로듀서 브라이언 이노가 참여했으며 역시 호의적인 평을 많이 받았다. 또한, 이 앨범으로 여러개의 그래미 상을 수상했다. 콜드플레이는 현재까지 5천 여만 장의 앨범을 팔았다[1]
초기 콜드플레이는 라디오헤드(Radiohead)나 제프 버클리(Jeff Buckley), 유투(U2), 또는 트래비스(Travis)에 비교되곤 했다.[2] 앨범 Parachutes 이후, 그들은 다양한 여러 밴드에서 영향을 받았다. A Rush of Blood to the Head 앨범 같은 경우는 에코 & 더 버니멘(Echo & the Bunnymen)[3], 케이트 버쉬(Kate Bush), 그리고 조지 헤리슨(George Harrison)[4]에게서 영향을 받았다. 다운로드수가 말그대로 '컴퓨터에 불 날' 정도였다고 하니

전작에서 능력이상의 주목을 받고 나서 그런 과대평가를 잠재울 만한 후속앨범을 낸다는 것은 정말 쉽지 않은 일이다. 한번 과대평가를 받는 가수들의 일반적인 행보를 살펴보면 앨범을 한, 두장 내놓고 마니아층을 형성하고 이상하리만큼 평단의 평가는 엇갈리며 그들은 음악 외적인 활동으로 그 세력을 넓혀간다. 대표적인 아티스트로 신해철, 자우림의 김윤아, 롤러코스터(음악 외적인 활동은 롤러코스터에 해당하는 사항이 아니기는 하지만.. 어쨌든)가 있는데 이들은 미묘하지만 큰 차이를 가지고 있다. 적어도 롤러코스터가 3집을 발매한 이후로는…. 롤러코스터의 1, 2집은 단지 사운드가 세련되었다는 점 때문에 큰 인기를 얻었다고 생각한다. 물론 여기서 말하는 ‘세련됨’은 일반 대중이 받아들이는 편안함을 기준으로 설정한 단어이다...
플레이 버튼을 누르자 숨을 고를 새도 없이 한데 뒤엉켜버린 기타와 키보드의 파장이 귓 속을 파고든다. 강압적으로 밀려드는 슬픔, 일말의 공상을 허용하지 않는 비장함. 모든 것이 멈추고 비로소 크리스 마틴(Chris Martin)의 나지막한 읊조림이 있을 때까지 긴장을 늦츨 수 없다. 단 몇십초간의 인트로만으로 [A Rush Of Blood To The Head]의 전부가 예고되어지는 순간, 콜드플레이(Coldplay)의 근심이 많은 몇몇 청자들은 생각난 듯 던져놓았던 잡지를 펼친다. "이번 앨범 평이 어땠었지?" 혹은, "별이 몇 개였더라?"아니, 실은 단지 몇몇의 이야기가 아닐지도 모른다. 아무 것도 생각하지 않고 받아들이기에는 이미 밴드는 너무 커져버렸고, 그들을 둘러싼 환경은 지나치리만큼 복잡해 졌다....
