FRANCIS ALBERT(FRANK) SINATRA라는 이름의 시나트라는 1915년 12월 12일 미국 뉴저지주 호보컨에서 출생, 1998년 5월 14일 캘리포니아 주 로스 엔젤레스에서 타계할 때까지 83년이란 영욕의 세월을 점철하고 있다. 아직도 '마이 웨이'를 부르는 그의 모습이 눈에 선하게 다가오고 있지만, 이는 그의 힘에서 비롯된 일종의 신기루 같은 착시현상에 다르지 않다. 이탈리아에서 이민 온 부모의 독자로 태어난 프랭크는 어린 시절 그 역시 이민 생활의 고달픈 환경에서 성장한다. 17세가 되던 어느 날 빙 크로스비의 공연을 접하며 가수를 지망하면서, 독학으로 음악이론과 노래 공부를 열심히 하는 한편, 당시로서는 아직 드문 사운드 시스템을 구입하여 노래할 수 있는 기회를 마련하였다.
맨하튼과 근교의 라디오 방송국과 클럽에서 밑바닥 생활의 고생을 쌓은 후에 39년 6월 우연히 라디오에서 시나트라의 노래를 들은 해리 제임스가 그의 악단에 가수로 영입하게 된다. 이 사실은 시나트라가 가수의 꿈을 이룰 수 있는 커다란 계기가 되었다. 7월 13일 제임스 악단과 뉴욕에서 대망의 첫 레코딩을 하는데, '프럼 더 바텀 오브 마이 하트'와 '멜랑코리 무드'의 2곡을 녹음하였다. 제임스 시대에 10곡을 레코딩했지만 평판은 별로였다. 그 해 말에 제임스 악단과 시카고 공연 중에, 역시 시카고에 와 있던 당대 최고의 밴드를 이끌고 있던 토미 도오시의 오디션에 합격하는 영광을 안았다. 제임스는 시나트라의 장래를 생각하여 1년 반이나 남았던 계약기간을 유쾌히 파기하여 주었다. 40년 1월 시나트라는 도오시 악단에 참가하게 되었고 2월 1일 시카고에서 '더 스카이 펠 다운'과 '투 로맨틱'을 시작으로 도오시 악단과는 42년 7월 2일까지 83곡의 스투디오 녹음을 남겼다.
'트럼본으로 노래의 레슨을 받은 사람은 별로 없을 것이다.'라고 시나트라가 술회했듯이 시나트라는 도오시의 트롬본 주법에서 숨을 길게하며 하는 프레이징과 정교한 호흡 조절, 스무드하게 전조하는 테크닉을 배우고, 도오시 악단에 몸담은 2년 반 사이에 가수로서의 장족의 발전을 이룬다.'아일 네버 스마일 어게인'을 필두로 '오 룩 앳 미 나우', '데어 어 서치 싱즈'외에도 많은 레코드가 힛트하며 41년 다운 비트 지의 인기투표에서 37년 이후 빙 크로스비가 지켜왔던 남성가수 부분의 탑에 랭크되었다. 이에 힘입어 42년 1월에 처음 자신의 이름으로 '나이트 앤드 데이' 등 4곡을 녹음하였으며, 9월에 도오시 악단을 탈퇴하여 오랜 세월의 꿈이었던 솔로 싱어로서의 길을 선택한다. 그 해 12월 30일 베니 굿맨 악단의 게스트 싱어로 출연한 뉴욕의 패러마운트 극장은 여학생들을 흥분의 도가니로 몰았다. 뮤지션들의 스트라이크로 43년 전반을 녹음을 할 수 없게 되자 컬럼비아사가 39년에 녹음한 제임스 악단의 지난 앨범 '올 오어 낫싱 앳 올'을 시나트라의 명의로 발매하자마자 밀리언 셀러를 기록했다. 6월에는 같은 레이블에서 레코딩이 재개되어 '유일 네버 노우'와 '오웟 잇 심드 투 비'를 시작으로 악셀 스토달 편곡의 달콤한 스트링즈를 반주로 녹음한 발라드가 속속 힛트하며, '더 보이스'라는 닉네임을 얻을 정도로 대단한 인기를 얻었다. 그 정점은 44년 10월 12일 컬럼버스의 미대륙 발견 기념일의 패러마운트 극장에서의 콘서트이다. 수많은 팬들이 몰려와 타임스퀘어 일대를 대혼란으로 몰아 넣었다.
그러나 쇼우, 레코드, 영화, 라디오에서 대활약한 시나트라의 인기도 창법상의 매너리즘, 오랜 시간 꽉 짜여진 스케줄과 공적, 사적 트러블, 매스컴의 공격, 대중의 음악에 대한 취향의 변화 등의 요인이 과중되어 47년경부터 어려움이 찾아 왔다. 49년 말 다운비트 지의 인기투표에서 오래 독점하였던 남성부문 탑의 자리를 물려주었다. 50년 5월 1일 뉴욕의 '코파카바나' 스테이지에서 제 목소리가 나오지 않는 등 시련이 계속되었다. 그러나 가창상으로는 새로운 시나트라를 향하여 착실하게 변모하였다는 점은 컬럼비아 후기 레코드를 들으면 알 수 있다. 9월 '와이 트라이 투 체인지 미 나우'를 마지막으로 컬럼비아와의 계약이 일방적으로 파기되는 등 52년은 가장 깊은 실의에 빠졌으나, 제임스 죤스의 소설 '지상에서 영원으로'의 영화화를 알고 2등병 마지오 역을 필사의 노력으로 획득하여 아카데미 최우수 조연상을 수상했다.
53년 4월부터 캐피털 레코드와 계약하고 오랜 세월 그의 왼팔이 된 명 편곡, 지휘자 넬슨 리들과 조우하여 레코딩하였다. 넬슨은 "이전에는 바이올린 같은 허약한 소리가 이제야 훌륭한 첼로 사운드로 바뀌었다."고 형언할 정도로 그의 목소리는 벨벳 보이스로 스무드하게 부르는 빙 크로스비 스타일을 벗어나 발라드 창법과 재즈 감각으로 접목하여 약동감 넘치는 스윙 스타일로 새로운 경지를 열면서 이후 수많은 가수에게 지대한 영향을 끼친다. 53년 녹음의 '영 앳 하트'가 크게 힛트하고, '송즈 포 영 러버스'와 '스윙 이지'가 함께 팬, 비평가 양쪽에서 대호평을 받았다. 이 두 앨범은 현재도 시나트라를 대표하는 명반이다. 영화와 음반의 성공으로 최대의 컴백을 하면서 이를 계기로 영화 출연 의뢰도 쇄도하였는데, '영 앳 하트'(55년)는 가수 도리스 데이와 '하이 소사이어티'(56년)에서는 빙 크로스비, 그레이스 켈리, 루이 암스트롱과 공연하였고 특히 '더 맨 위드 골든 암'(55년)으로는 아카데미 최우수 남우상에 노미네이트되었다. 넬슨 리들과의 공조로 스윙 앨범 '송스 포 스윙잉 러버스'와 발라드집 '온리 더 론리'로 최정점에 달하며, 또 다른 두명의 유능한 편곡자 고든 젠킨스와 빌리 메이를 영입하여 레코딩하였는데, 전자와는 59년 '노 원 케어즈', 후자와는 57년의 '컴 플라이 위드 미'가 발군이다. 전성기로 말하면 캐피털 시대이지만 50년대 후반이 되면서 가장 팝적인 녹음을 요구한 캐피털과의 알력이 생겨 떠나고, 61년 1월 이미 설립하였던 자신의 레이블 리프라이즈(REPRISE)의 녹음에 전념한다.
60년대의 시나트라는 원숙미를 더하여 흥미와 재미가 넘치는 노래와 미국 연예계의 대부다운 대혀 기획으로 팬들을 즐겁게 하였다. 이 때 카운트 베이시와 듀크 엘링턴 악단과의 공연 음반을 남겼다. 65년 '셉템버 오브 마이 이어스'와 66년 '어 맨 앤드 히스 뮤직'으로 그래미 어워드 최우수 앨범상을 연속으로 수상하고 이 해 '스트레인져 인 더 나이트'가 빌보드 챠트 탑에 오르며 시나트라의 건재를 재확인하였다. 67년에는 그의 장녀 낸시와 '프랭크 앤 낸시'를 레코딩하였고, 69년에 폴 앵커가 그를 위해 만든 '마이 웨이'가 빅 힛트를 치고 71년 6월 13일 L. A에 있는 아만슨 극장에서 자선공연 출연을 최후로 은퇴를 선언하여 세계적인 팬들에게 추격을 주었지만, 73년 11월 TV 스페셜 '올 블루 아이즈 이즈 백'으로 컴백하며 동명의 앨범도 호평을 받았다. 그 후에 여러 앨범을 발표하였지만 어느 것이나 깊은 맛을 더하면서 노련함을 보일 정도이다. 93년에 제작한 '듀엣'이 3백만장을 넘겼고 94년에는 '듀엣2'를 발매하였는데, 결국 95년도 그래미 어워드 트래디셔널 팝 퍼포먼스 상을 획득했다. 이 해는 시나트라 나이 80세가 된 해이기도 했다. 이 해에 완전히 은퇴하여 건강을 돌보다 98년 5월 심장마비로 죽을 때까지 그는 60년 가까운 세월을 아메리칸 엔터테인먼트를 위하여 살았고 개인적으로도 대단한 성공을 이룬 아티스트였다. .... ....

도리스 레이를 좋아해서 고른 영화인데 프랭크 시나트라와 함께 한 작품이라 음악은 좋다. 일단 긍정적인 면부터 얘기하자면 음악은 좋다는 것. 다른 장점은... 음... 도리스 레이가 나와서 음악은 좋다는 점. 다른 장점은 음... 딸이 셋 있는, 음악과 교수집이 있는데 딸들은 셋 다 음악을 잘한다. 첫째 딸은 돈 좀 버는 부동산 사업가와 결혼하기로 되어 있고 둘째딸은 배관공이 열렬히 사모하고 있으므로 연애 직전이다. 셋째 딸이 도리스 데이인데 아버지의.....
