건스 앤 로지스(Guns N' Roses)는 1980년대 말에서 1990년대 초에 크게 인기를 끈 미국의 하드 록 밴드이다. 그들이 발표한 1987년 데뷔 앨범 Appetite for Destruction과 1988년작 GN'R Lies, 1991년에 발표된 더블 앨범 Use Your Illusion I과 Use Your Illusion II는 전 세계적으로 폭발적인 인기를 끌었다.
1988년 정규 데뷔 앨범 Appetite for Destruction에서 싱글로 커트된 Sweet Child O'Mine은 빌보드 싱글차트 (Hot 100) 1위까지 오르는 대히트를 기록했고, 또다른 싱글 Welcome To The Jungle과 Paradise City 역시 싱글 차트 10위권 안에 모두 오르는 등 당대 최고의 인기를 누렸다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범 Appetite for Destruction은 현재까지 미국에서만 1500만장 이상이 판매되어 역대 하드록 또는 헤비메틀 밴드로서는 가장 높은 판매고를 기록한 앨범 중 하나로 기록되고 있으며, 80년대 하드록 앨범의 클래식으로 인정받고 있다. 이어 발표한 GN'R Lies는 이들의 데뷔초 EP인 Live Like Suicide 4곡과 어쿠스틱 트랙 4곡을 포함해 간단히 제작한 앨범임에도 불구하고 역시 대히트를 기록하며 수백만장의 판매고를 기록했으며, 데뷔 앨범과 함께 빌보드 앨범 차트 5위권 안에 동시에 두 앨범이 오르는 기현상을 보이며 이들의 뜨거운 인기를 증명했다. 앨범에서는 데뷔 앨범과는 전혀 다른 분위기의 어쿠스틱 발라드 Patience가 싱글 차트 상위권에 오르는 등 크게 히트했고 Used To Love Her 역시 꽤 많은 사랑을 받았다. 또한 앨범의 마지막곡 One In A Million은 논란이 될만한 가사로 인해 화제가 되기도 했다.
밴드는 1990년부터 새로운 앨범 제작을 본격적으로 시작했는데 이 당시 오리지널 드러머인 Steven Adler가 약물복용에 따른 문제를 일으키며 팀에서 해고되고, Cult 출신의 드러머 Matt Sorum이 새로 가입하게 된다. 또한 본 앨범부터는 피아노, 키보드 연주자로 Dizzy Reed가 참여하기 시작했다. 앨범은 팬들의 궁금증을 증폭시키며 발매가 한동안 연기되기도 했는데, 1990년 Farm Aid 라이브를 통해 신곡 Civil War가 처음 공개되었고, 본 공연은 Steven Adler가 참여한 마지막 공연이 되었다. Use Your Illusion II의 첫 트랙 Civil War는 Steven Adler가 연주한 것으로 수록되어 있다. 또한 톰 크루즈, 니콜 키드먼이 출연했던 영화 Days Of Thunder의 OST에는 밥 딜런의 곡 Knockin' On Heaven's Door가 정식으로 커버되어 최초 공개되었다. 이어 다음해인 1991년 여름 앨범 발매를 앞둔 시기, 제임스 카메론의 대작 Terminator 2: Judgement Day가 개봉되며 신작에 수록될 You Could Be Mine이 영화에 수록되었고 앨범이 발매전 첫 싱글로 발표되었다. 이 곡의 뮤직비디오에서는 Guns N' Roses의 팬인 아놀드 슈워제네거가 카메오로 등장하기도 했다. 결국 1991년 가을 어렵게 발표된 야심찬 신작 Use Your Illusion는 놀랍게도 각각 76분이 넘는 달하는 1CD와 더블 LP로 제작, 각각 파트 1과 파트2로 각기 동시 발매되었다. 수록곡만 30여곡이고, CD2장, LP4장에 러닝 타임은 150분이 넘는 초대작임에도 불구하고 두 장의 앨범은 발매가 되자마자 동시에 앨범차트 1, 2위를 석권하는 기염을 토하며 Guns N' Roses의 폭발적인 인기를 실감하게 했다. 앨범에는 2, 3분대의 짧은곡부터 November Rain, Coma, Locomotive, Estranged, Breakdown 등을 포함 최장 10분이 넘는 대곡들까지 여러곡 수록되는 등 다양하게 수록되어 있다. 스타일 또한 메틀, 펑크, 글램이 혼합된 아메리칸 하드록에 집중된 데뷔 앨범에 비해 Use Your Illusion은 전형적인 하드록이 중심이 되지만 강력한 헤비메틀부터 서던록, 어쿠스틱, 팝발라드, 프로그레시브, 인더스트리얼 스타일에 이르기까지 광범위하다. 하지만 1991년말 성공적인 반응에도 불구하고 앨범이 발표된 후 얼마안되어 밴드의 리듬 기타리스트이자 메인 송라이터 중 한명인 Izzy Stradlin이 탈퇴하며 밴드는 또다른 오리지널 멤버를 잃게 되었다 (Izzy Stradlin은 음악적인 견해차이와 밴드의 거대화에 대한 염증으로 탈퇴 후 자신의 밴드 Izzy Stradlin & Juju Hounds를 결성해 이듬해 동명의 앨범을 발표한다). 이후 그를 대신해 LA에서 활동 중이던 기타리스트 Gilby Clarke가 가입해 월드 투어 및 뮤직비디오 등에 참여한다. 그 역시 Izzy Stradlin과 마찬가지로 준수한 외모에 송라이팅과 보컬이 가능한 재주꾼으로, 공연 중에는 비교적 조용한 스타일로 밴드의 멤버들과 잘 조화되어 활동했다.
1993년 Use Your Illusion 월드투어를 마친 후 제작한 마지막 스튜디오 음반 The Spaghetti Incident?는 오리지널 멤버들이 참여한 마지막 앨범으로, 수록곡들은 New York Dolls, UK Subs, Iggy & Stooges, Sex Pistols (Steve Jones), Soundgarden, Fear 등 이들이 좋아하는 밴드들의 곡을 커버한 것이다. 이 발매된 이후 Slash, Duff, Gilby Clarke 등 밴드의 멤버들은 각자 솔로 앨범을 발표하거나 프로젝트 밴드를 만들어 활동하는 등 바쁜 나날을 보냈으나, 결국 팀의 리더격이었던 Axl Rose와 다른 멤버들의 음악적 견해 차이와 불화로 인해 모든 오리지널 멤버들이 탈퇴 또는 해고되었다. 이후 Axl Rose는 법적인 문제 등으로 시간을 보낸 뒤 90년대 후반부터 키보디스트 Dizzy Reed를 제외하고 모두 새로운 멤버들을 모아 새 앨범의 제작 준비를 시작했다. 새로운 라인업으로 제작한 첫 번째 곡은 1999년 영화 End Of Days에 수록된 Oh My God이었다. 이 곡은 당시 기존 Guns N' Roses의 음악과 전혀 다른 스타일로, Axl Rose가 추구하던 인더스트리얼 록의 요소가 상당히 강하게 배어있는 곡이다. 이 곡에는 Nine Inch Nails 출신의 기타리스트 로빈 핑크를 비롯해 새로운 멤버들로 구성되었고, Jane's Addiction의 기타리스트 데이브 나바로가 참여하기도 했다. 또한 Oh My God이 발표되기 얼마전 밴드는 클래식 라인업 시대를 정리하는 더블 라이브 앨범 Live Era를 발표하기도 했다. 이후 새롭게 정비된 밴드는 2000년대 초반 이후 Rock In Rio 등의 대규모 공연에 참여하고 독자적인 콘서트를 간간히 개최하며 팬들을 흥분시켰지만, 예고된 다음 앨범 Chinese Democracy의 발매는 계속해서 지연되다가 마침내 2008년 11월 23일, 약 15년여 간의 준비 끝에 발매 된다. .... ....
