Il Postino, 1994 (일 포스티노)집배원(우체부) Starring: Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi, Maria Grazia Cucinotta Director: Michael Radford Run Time: 108 칠레의 좌파 시인 파블로 네루다(Pablo Neruda: 필립 누아레 분)는 고국에서 추방당한 뒤, 아내와 함께 이태리의 작은 섬에 머물게 된다. 섬의 우체국은 위대한 시인의 도착으로 엄청나게 불어난 우편물 배달을 위해 전속 우편배달부를 고용하게 되는데, 어부의 아들인 마리오 로뽈로(Mario Ruoppolo: 마시모 트로이시 분)가 그 일을 맡게 된다. 네루다는 너무나도 순박한 마리오에게 호감을 느껴 둘은 친구가 되고, 마리오가 짝사랑하는 아름다운 아가씨 베아트리체 루쏘(Beatrice Russo: 마리아 그라지아 꾸치노따 분)와의 사랑을 이루는데 도움을 준다. 이 과정에서 쌓여진 우정과 신뢰를 통해 마리오는 아름답고 무한한 시와 은유의 세계를 만나게 된다. 시간이 흘러 추방령에서 풀린 네루다가 고국으로 돌아가자, 네루다를 그리워하는 마리오는 섬의 파도소리, 풀잎을 스치는 바람 소리, 성당의 종소리 등 모든 소리를 담아 그에게로 보낸다. 하지만 네루다는 너무나 바쁜 일정 탓에 몇년이 지난 후에야 마리오를 만나기 위해 섬으로 돌아온다. 영국인 감독 마이클 랫포드가 1982년 스코틀랜드에서 영화 <다음번엔 딴 곳에서>의 캐스팅을 할 무렵, 1981년 <셋부터 시작할께요>의 흥행 대성공으로 스타덤에 오른 마시모 트로이시에게 주연을 맡아 줄 것을 제안했으나 트로이시는 건강상의 이유로 거절했지만 나중에라도 같이 손잡고 영화를 만들어 보자는 말을 잊지 않았다. 그후 거의 10년이 지난 후 트로이시는 칠레에서 출판된 1971년 노벨 문학상 수상자인 파블로 네루다와 젊은 집배원간에 싹튼 감동적인 우정을 그린 안또니오 스까르메따(Antonio Skarmeta) 원작의 '불타는 인내심(Ardiente Paciencia)'을 가지고 영국에 마이클 랫포드를 만나러 갔다. 트로이시의 영화화 제안에 동의한 랫포드는 로마로 거처를 옮기고 구체적인 영화작업을 시작했다. 시대적 배경을 1952년 이탈리아(네루다가 실제로 이탈리아 정부의 도움으로 나폴리의 작은 섬에서 망명 생활을 하고 있던 시기)로 바꾸고, 집배원도 17살의 소년에서 30대 노총각으로 바꾸었다. 감독이 영국인인데 비해 이태리어 대사에 이태리 제작진, 거의 다 이태리 배우들로 짜여진 촬영에 들어가게 된 점에 대해 우려의 목소리는 높았으나, 트로이시는 언어와 문화적 이질감 따위는 서로간의 신뢰감으로 말끔히 씻을 수 있다고 믿고 있었다. 그러나 심장병을 앓고 있던 배우 마시모 트로이시는 이 영화를 마지막으로 촬영이 끝난 직후 세상을 떠나 [일 포스티노]는 유작으로 남았다.
