오아시스(Oasis)는 1991년 영국 맨체스터에서 결성된 록 밴드이다. 초창기 멤버는 리암 갤러거 (리드 보컬), 폴 "귁시" 맥기건 (베이스), 폴 "본헤드" 아더스 (기타) 그리고 토니 맥캐롤 (드럼)이었고 그후 리암 갤러거의 형인 노엘 갤러거 (기타, 보컬)가 곧 가입했다. 이들은 6500만 장 넘는 앨범과 8개의 영국 넘버 1 싱글을 배출하며 1990년대 가장 성공적인 영국의 음악 그룹으로서 부상했다.

곡과 가사적인 측면에서, 오아시스는 비틀즈(The Beatles), 더 후(The Who), 롤링 스톤즈(The Rolling Stones), 킹크스(The Kinks) 등 브리티시 인베이전 밴드들의 영향을 가장 많이 받았다고 한다. 또한 스톤 로지즈(The Stone Roses), 레드 제플린(Led Zeppelin), 섹스 피스톨즈(The Sex Pistols), 더 잼(The Jam), 티렉스(T.Rex)로부터도 영향을 받았다고 전해진다.
비평가들로부터 찬사를 받은 데뷔 앨범 《Definitely Maybe》(1994)와 2,000만장을 판매하며 더 큰 성공을 거둔 2집 《(What's the Story) Morning Glory?》(1995)를 통해 90년대 중반 당시 라이벌이었던 블러와 함께 큰 인기를 끌었고, 브릿팝 운동의 선두에 서게 되었다. 또한 갤러거 형제는 타블로이드 신문을 연일 장식하며 악동으로서, 또한 국민밴드로서의 명성을 동시에 얻게 되었다.

솔직히 말해 오아시스의 새 앨범을 듣고 특별히 할 말이 떠오르지 않았다. CDP에 걸어 놓고 듣는 동안에는 이따금씩 손가락도 까딱거려 주고, 멋진 멜로디는 허밍으로 따라 하기도 하고, 기타 솔로 부분에서는 에어 기타도 쳐 주고 했지만, 정작 다 듣고 나서는 마땅히 할 말이 떠오르지 않았다. 쥐어 짜내려고 해도 별 매력 없는 상투적인 문구들만 배어나올 뿐이었다. 좌절에 빠져, '다른 사람들도 나처럼 이럴까?'하는 생각을 하면서 잡지를 뒤적였다. 우선 'UK 차트 1위'라는 제목의 기사가 눈에 띈다. 차트 1위라니, 전작 [Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants]보다 대중적이란 얘기이던가 요즘 UK 차트가 빈곤하다는 의미이거나 둘 중 하나겠지.
