Meet me in the middle of the day
Let me hear you say everything's okay Bring me southern kisses from your room Meet me in the middle of the night Let me hear you say everything's alright Let me smell the moon in your perfume Oh, Gods and years will rise and fall And there's always something more It's lost in talk, I waste my time And it's all been said before While further down behind the masquerade the tears are there I don't ask for all that much I just want someone to care That's right now Meet me in the middle of the day Let me hear you say everything's okay Come on out beneath the shining sun Meet me in the middle of the night Let me hear you say everything's alright Sneak on out beneath the stars and run Oh yeah, oh yeah yeah, oh yeah It's king and queen and we must go down now beyond the chandelier Where I won't have to speak my mind and you won't have to hear Shreds of news and afterthoughts and complicated scenes We'll huddle down behind the light and fade like magazines Meet me in the middle of the day Let me hear you say everything's okay Bring me southern kisses from your room Hey hey, meet me in the middle of the night Let me hear you say everything's alright Let me smell the moon in your perfume Oh now, meet me in the middle of the day Let me hear you say everything's okay Let me see you smiling back at me Hey, meet me in the middle of the night Let me hear you say everything's alright Hold me tight and love and loving's free Whoa yeah |

It Sure Was Better Back Then a" Steve Forbert
Live version a" Folk Live from Mountain Stage (guitar Intro) Working on the Georgia Line the live long day Ninety nine degrees and only half past May Nailing down the metal with the crosstime blues I had creosote all over my shoes I hated it, you know, now I find I miss it Every time my little pension check rolls in Course I had it bad... not as bad as this is It sure was better back then yeah It sure was better back then Working in the rain beneath surplus tarp Foreman in the wagon twanging a sad Jews harp Passing out at night still in my mud caked jeans I was living off of berries and beans I hated it, you know, now I swear I miss it Every time I look down on my pale white skin Course I had it bad... not as bad as this is It sure was better back then It sure was better back then (guitar lead) Well, the cable caught my leg, and, boy, the damn thing bled Foreman sewed the muscle up with tarp patch thread Sit me by the camp, gonna have the cook clean pans And scrub them down with Georgia red sand... I hated it, you know, now I really I miss it Staring in my TV till the broadcast ends Course I had it bad... not as bad as this is It sure was better back then It sure was better back then It sure was better back... one more time... It sure was better back then (guitar lead) (spoken over guitar lead) Let's go on off with 'em (??) ...Some kind of beat happenin' (audience clapping) ...that's gonna do, that's good... (??) Well, the cable caught my leg, and, boy, the damn thing bled Foreman sewed the muscle up with tarp patch thread Sit me by the camp, gonna have the cook clean pans And scrub them down with Georgia red sand... I hated it, you know, now I really I miss it Starin' in the TV till the broadcast ends Course I had it bad... not as bad as this is It sure was better back then It sure was better back then It sure was better back... one more time... Who took your hand
When I had nothing to say? Who brushed your tears away? Who heard your cries? When I had no time to spare? Who came on wings that day? Look, if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have And if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have, Darling... Turn down your street And try to moonage daydream, Turn up your soundtrack high; Turn back weird years And fly to champagne rain days, Turn down your bed and sigh 'Cause if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have And if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have, Darling... Who's built his world Around your green eyed laugh lines? Who wakes each day to find Love's filled his heart With light like no known past times And mixed his need with mine? Look, if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have And if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have And if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have And if I want you now It's 'cause I only want what I can't have, Darling... |

The fortune teller's eyes,
They would not look at me, She said these cards don't lie An' I said so what d' you see? She told me what I did, Her voice was cold an' odd, She said go hug your kids An' check your faith in God Because your time ain't long, She said your time ain't long, You ain't done no one wrong, You've got a fine, safe home, But, boy, your time ain't long. I walked out homeward bound An' I drove them crosstown blocks An' I felt the sun fade down An' I passed a stonefaced clock An' I thought my time ain't long, I thought my time ain't long, My drug an' booze day's gone, I rise an' shine at dawn, How come my time ain't long? My wife just laughed at me An' kept on ironing clothes, What will an' will not be, She said there's no one knows, But if she's got ESP, Well, how come she lives down there? It just sounds like bull to me, She ain't no millionaire. Who says your time ain't long? Who says your time ain't long? You keep your seatbelt on, You feel your heart beat strong, Who says your time ain't long? Who says your time ain't long? Who says your time ain't long? Your drug an' booze day's gone, You rise an' shine at dawn, Who says your time ain't long? You ain't done no one wrong, You've got a fine, safe home, Who says your time ain't long? |

Moon shines on the end of my street;
Moon shines where the demonoids meet. Moon shines on the battlefront town; Moon shines where the buildings burnt down. I can't cry and I don't look back, I can't cry and I don't look back, Back... Moon shines on the reservoir tide; Moon shines on the silver lake side. Moon shines on the telescope dome; Moon shines on the billionaire's home. I can't cry and I don't look back, I can't cry and I don't look back, Back... Moon shines on the swingin' white gate; Moon shines while the limousine waits. Moon shines on the rockin' horse head; Moon shines on the sheets of my bed. I can't cry and I don't look back, I can't cry and I don't look back, Back... I'm just standin' on shaky ground, Ever since you put me down, Standin' on shaky ground, Ever since you put me down, Standin' on shaky ground, Ever since you put me down, Standin' on shaky ground, Ever since you put me down. |

Dear Lord, hear Lord,
Please, if you will, my plea, Send me someone else, Send me someone else. I can't eat, I can't sleep, I don't even brush my teeth, Down here by myself, Down here by myself. Though my paths may wind through walls of grapevine, Though the trees hang ripe with fruit to eat, Though the berry buds may bloom and taste fine, I can't help but look for fruit more sweet. The one thing that I'd bring To this scene so free Is somethin' much like me, Is somethin' much like me Except with soft lips An' tender breasts an' hips An' pretty eyes to see An' pretty eyes to see. Though these last few nights were white with moonlight, Though your brooks and streams are clean and clear, Though your morning sun's a fine and bright sight, I can't help but look for more down here. So dear Lord, hear Lord, Make me someone new, If you'd be so kind, If you'd be so kind. My bed's cold, the game's old, I'm awf'ly bored and blue. If you would not mind, If you would not mind. |

So you're down,
So it's hard, Don't stop, Don't stop now. Stop an' you're negating Ev'rything that you've been waiting for so long; Stop an' you're denying Ev'rything that you've been trying for so long. So you're down, So it's hard, Don't stop, Don't stop now. What you gonna do when You're not in there tryin' t' do what you can do? I know you can do it If you'll only just stick to it's up to you. There comes a time when things look so uncertain, Seems like fate just won't allow Reason's rhyme, but you set sail for something And I'm on that dream boat now. So you're down, So it's hard, Don't stop, Don't stop now. Don't say you don't care about The whereabouts of why it's not insane; Don't say it don't matter, Got to climb that broken ladder in the rain. In your eyes I look to find the person That I've always found before, If she's gone, I just can't say for certain I belong here anymore. So you're down, So it's hard, Don't stop, Don't stop now. World don't owe you nothing An' the world don't show you nothing but the door, But when you surrender All your hopes an' dreams will end there, that's for sure. So you're down, So it's hard, Don't stop, Don't stop. |

A perfect stranger might could make you smile,
Might could take your mind off your despair for half a while, But time moves quickly, strangers look like friends, Friends might fall in love and perfect strangers might pretend And so it happens, Take a look around, Some will rake the coals And some will burn a wedding gown. The sad romantics fail to grasp the world, Fail to recognize there ain't no perfect boy or girl And so keep fumbling, feelin' incomplete, Makin' love and breakin' hearts and searchin' on the street And so it happens, Take a look around, Some will rake the coals And some will burn a wedding gown. And look at me (or maybe don't, now) Hey, yeah, look at me (or maybe don't, now) Look at me (or maybe don't, now) Hey, yeah, look at me (or maybe don't, now) And Charlie Chaplin had to realize Eighteen year old Oona made a golden final prize, And Warren Beatty must have gotten scared When Madonna made him fin'ly see he'd lost some hair And so it happens, Take a look around, Some will rake the coals And some will burn a wedding gown, Some will rake the coals And some will burn a wedding gown. |

I know what I know,
I see what I see And whatever will be and not be Is not up to me; I struggle and strain Again and again While the power that makes and breaks things Works effortlessly. I know what I know. I scheme and I try, I grab at the sky, But my urge for that whole control thing Will never fulfill; I dream and I plan, I do what I can, But whatever gets done and not done Is strictly God's will. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know, Though I can't speak for you, I know what I know Yeah, from my point of view... The man in the moon Would sing a new tune, But he can't rearrange or change things And nobody can Alone on their own; I see what I'm shown And the power to mold and hold things Is out of my hands. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. I know what I know. |

What a big new world
Is it all this tall? Shelves in the den And the fan blades that spin Seem far away; On my hands and knees I can crawl the hall, Wide open door To the warm carpet floor Says, "Please come through." When I'm alone and in my room And lights are low, I want some more of all those things That make time go; I like the strange and changing Daytime sights and sounds And I like that ev'ning fun When everyone's around. In the pots and pans I enjoy myself; Food I'll consume If I hold my own spoon In my own way. When I'm alone and in my room And lights are low, I want some more of all those things That make time go; I like the strange and changing Daytime sights and sounds And I like that ev'ning fun When everyone's around. Let me laugh with you, Toss me high and smile; Sleep what a bore, What's the point? What's it for? And why so soon? When I'm alone and in my room And lights are low, I want some more of all those things That make time go; I like the strange and changing Daytime sights and sounds And I like that ev'ning fun When everyone's around. Oh la, la, la, etc. What a big new world. |

Open house now for your fading heart,
Tell your ghost it's time to hide; Strangers won't know when to stop and start Once they've fin'ly got inside. Spir'ling staircase toward your dusty mind, With crates and boxes and bags and trunks; No one cares what tender dreams they'll find, All they'll see up there is junk With silver dollars from a ragdoll's ear And merc'ry dimes for buttons, too, And flutes and whistles only kids can hear And peacock feathers green and blue. Deep depression in a walnut grain, Afternoons on rainy days; Once it stacked up well in both your brains, And now it's all some purple haze With vandals picking locks and breaking doors And smashing keepsakes all around; Souvenirs of love and foreign shores And scrapbook pages all unbound. It's open house now for your fading heart, Tell your ghost it's time to hide; Strangers won't know when to stop and start Once they've fin'ly got inside. |

The signal lights jerk in the wind
And snow blows off the road like sand, The driver squints and sets his chin, He's got to hold the upper hand, Saginaw by midnight, that's the plan And then the snow blows harder still On covered roads and slip'ry hills, This trip will surely test his will... Dream, dream Of a Sunday, Dream, dream, Safe in bed, Dream, dream, With the sheets high round your head, Home instead, Dream, dream, Dream, dream... She don't sell drugs or ev'ning news, She's got those rosebuds in her hand, She took those Goodwill, bulky shoes Because she's got so long to stand Down there where the offramp meets with Grand And when the dark cuts off the day, She'll drag that box and walk away, Back to that place they let her stay... Dream, dream Of a Sunday, Dream, dream, Safe in bed, Dream, dream, With the sheets high round your head, Home instead, Dream, dream... Someday soon the breaks won't bring you down; One day soon you'll wake up safe and sound. So now Hadzici's been returned And Tuesday night Ilidza will, So many houses here've been burned, Their ol' town hall stands smold'ring still, Muslim cheers and car horns split the chill And though he's far from home tonight, And though it's not his fight to fight, The cause for peace must mean it's right... Dream, dream Of a Sunday, Dream, dream, Safe in bed, Dream, dream, With the sheets high round your head, Home instead, Dream, dream, Dream, dream, Dream, dream, Dream, dream... |

I need hope to hold up my head in this town
I need faith to get out of bed when I'm down When my dreams are falling And all that I've tried has gone wrong Oh I need love to move on ahead and be strong I need hope to look for the good through the bad I need faith to know I ain't lost what I had When they've lied and cheat me, and tear what I care for in two I need love to rise up above and renew I need hope - hope against sorrow I need faith - faith in tomorrow I need a whole lotta love I need hope to go where I know I should be I need faith to know there's an answer for me When my skies are falling and clouds of despair start to form I need love to weather the wilds of the storm I need hope - hope against sorrow I need faith - faith in tomorrow I need a whole lotta love |

The world is too much with you all of the time
You got no space for grace inside of your mind Somethings can't be conquered so your thoughts all sayin' But if you search your heart you'll find a way Compared to how things were here something is wrong But we're here now and that means then he is now gone Don't wanna take gloom for granted Don't wanna bridge time to time And if you search your heart you'll ease your mind You know that those golden days of fall give way to Frozen nights of howlin' sounds of wind that have their way No matter what those silver bells of Christmas tell you But remember what you don't know And don't take it all too hard there may be things behind Your skies can show you sights no eyes can see No words can say so just behold these golden days These days of fall these golden days these golden Clear blue autumn days You walk on old childhood sidewalks looking for clues Till someone stairs and swears you couldn't be you You've been down the long way you know times are tough But if you search your heart you'll find I say If you search your heart you'll find I say If you search your heart you'll find enough |

Saddle up that old grey mare for me
I wanna ride until these eyes of mine can't see I never really feel like looking very much anymore And nothing really matters till it's closer than the house next door... People talk a lot, but they can never find the heart and the soul To put a lot of time into more than just a search for gold The river's flowing dirty and it's moving down to Pass Christian There used to be a time when it's water was a healing hand... Born too late and everything you know is gone, gone Born too late and everything you know is wrong I've got a wife in Cleveland and she hates my guts And everything about her's a reflection of what drove me nuts I stopped to buy a beer inside the trading post and lost my keys that somber wooden indian by the door began to laugh at me... My silver Catalina's busy rusting in the cool night air he's only got a few more miles beneath his hood out there I stood a while beside him and I thought about his thirst for oil I thought about his greed for speed and how we've all got spoiled/ |

Intro:
Down comes the pounding rain, and dark are the skies up above me But you'll be mine when the sun shines Racing to catch late trains, and waiting while crowds push and shove me But you'll be mine when the sun shines When the sun shines and I see your face All my long nights will melt into space Nobody speaks my name soft like it sounds when you love me But you'll be mine when the sun shines When the sun shines and I see your face All my long nights will melt into space And that's when I won't look back And I won't sing a thing about sorrow Cause you'll be mine when the sun shines Train on a countdown track still a few miles from tomorrow But you'll be mine when the sun shines And you'll be mine when the sun shines |

You got no shame and you tell no lies Your slate is clean and your mind is free Your soul is pure let it shine on me Let it shine, oh baby, baby Let it shine, yes let the whole thing breathe Let it shine, baby A concrete town and a deep blue sea A highway sign and some lonesome trees The mountains reach and the rivers flow They wait for you in the year's too long Let it shine, yeah baby, baby Let it shine, let the whole thing breathe Just let it shine, oh baby Prayers up to a God Prayers up to a God Prayers up to a God to your soul for the key Sad old city moon Sad old city moon Sad old city moon Sit down, down watched you sleep Yes you little baby You'll travel up and you'll travel down Walk the road while the world spins around With twinkling stars high above your head You'll live and die and you'll end up dead Let it shine, oh baby, baby Let it shine, yes, let the whole thing breathe Let it shine, oh baby ------------- Lyrics Powered by LyricFind Written By FORBERT, S. You've got a lotta detail in your life, of late you find
Hey, now that you got kids, well, things loom larger in your mind You make your best decisions in the time that you're allowed And still get caught at Christmas in that final countdown crowd It's always problems everywhere, you're juggling everyone You do your best each day but when the sun goes down it's done, it's done And then what slips through the cracks is just gonna go ahead and fall Don't let it keep you up nights when you know my friend You cannot win 'em all, oh no Exterminator, lawyer, doctor, daycare, dental bill Hey, now that you're essential, have you made yourself a will? You gotta have insurance just to drive your car to work And wind up down in court with some bad actor, neck brace jerk It's always problems everywhere, you're juggling everyone You do your best each day but when the sun goes down it's done, it's done And then what slips through the cracks is just gonna go ahead and fall Don't let it keep you up nights when you know my friend You cannot win 'em all, oh no Can't no one stop that airport that they're building over there? Those planes won't hardly clear your trees and noise will fill the air So set your sights on silent nights and greener pastures still So much for your retirement dreams on Oakview Pleasant Hill It's always problems everywhere, you're juggling everyone You do your best each day but when the sun goes down it's done, it's done And then what slips through the cracks is just gonna go ahead and fall Don't let it keep you up nights when you know my friend You cannot win 'em all, oh no, oh no |

Daybreak has beautifully broken
Boy, what a weird look of roots Pressure like this you might not even wish Of the locker room bullies at school Life heats up hard than the fire lane Drink nitroglycerin punch It's been a few plates and shake hands with the snake While you're runnin' in place eating lunch Maybe everything's fine if you follow And then you don't get in the way And you give it your best And then you get you some rest There's tomorrow is a new working day Some guys fear Capital Gains Tax Some people more then get by Watching through gates from their seaside estates They're amazed at how hard you still try Keep shifting gears and remember Rome wasn't build in a week And everyone's wild for the woman's big smile With these rolling down hills, won't see peaks Maybe everything's fine if you follow And then you don't get in the way And you give it your best And then you get you some rest 'Cause tomorrow is a new working day Live long enough in your own world Then you'll have come very far And then you'll be someone's called probably know something And no one will care what you are Make all your rounds and keep rolling What good will breaking down do You say you feel weird and your fate's disappeared It's probably just a new stream of the flu Maybe everything's fine if you follow And then you don't get in the way You give it your best And then you get you some rest 'Cause tomorrow's the new working day You give it your best And then you get you some rest 'Cause tomorrow's the new working day |

Pick me up, shake me out
And hang me on the line I'm a fool for you I looked up, saw you smile And then I saw your eyes I'm in love with you You're too much for me I'm a worn-out sail On the sidewalk sea There's a light There's a fire shining day and night It came burning through Shine on me, shine on down You keep me high and dry I'm in love with you You're too much for me I'm a worn-out sail On the sidewalk sea Too many faces Breaking aces half in two Some guys in scarlet Singing further down in the blues Eyes on the sidewalk They're ancient angry flashing true Baby, it's too many mornings Waking lonely cause of you Time goes by You break on down You can't keep holding on You don't know what to do I looked up, saw you smile I know I'm not so strong No, and I'm in love with you You're too much for me I'm a worn-out sail On the sidewalk sea |

Wait till the snow falls down on the doorstep
Wait till the branches make cracks on the sky Wind at your window, screams while you sleepy You live near your fire as the winter blows by Wait till the sidewalk shivers the beggars Robbed in their blankets they try to hang on Light from the street lane seems to shine better After the autumn has been here and gone God help the lost and lonely, God help the poor Cold days and ice nights only Hard times for sure, hard times for sure Wait till the winter makes it all brittle Colors all fade and the earth seems to die Black chimneys coughing, landlords are hiding No one can find them, it's useless to try Wait till the river freezes up solid Way up the line and the boats are all stuck Gray and the gambler tries to make sense, he's Far from his home and he's down on his luck God help the lost and lonely, God help the poor Cold days and ice nights only Hard times for sure, hard times for sure Dancers and snow queens, handsome and lovely Skate on the lake and fall deeply in love Silver skates gliding, faces all glowing Smooth and warm fingers and thumbs and their gloves God help the lost and lonely, God help the poor Cold days and ice nights only Hard times for sure, hard times for sure |

Take your seat in the table
Watch the cabaret fill Ted came down for the singer He saw the name on the bill How the minutes were draggin' As the audience grew Ted was growing impatient As he swallowed his brew "It's time to welcome the artist" He heard somebody say Saw a face in the floodlight And everything was okay Singer man, do your work Sing your song, make it hurt Sing the tears, sing the pain Make it all so real Then the singer was singing All his serious songs And his Band wa a-playing And Ted was hummin' along Meanwhile back in a corner There was a table for two Where sat the singer's cute lover And she was drinkin' a few All snuggled up with a stranger Who had his hand on her thigh She was receivin' his message And gazing into his eyes Singer man, do your work Sing your song, make it hurt Sing the tears, sing the pain Make it all so real So the sound came a-rollin' Tumblin' into the night And all the people were ravin' Sayin', "Man, our singer's alright" "He's such a burnin' performer What a fabulous show" Little lover was stirrin' She was ready to go An' while the singer was wailing She got up to depart The crowd was stompin' and cheering She was breakin' his heart Singer man, do your work Sing your song, make it hurt Sing the tears, sing the pain Make it all so real Ted was feelin' terrific As the crowd filtered out Ravin' on 'bout the hero There were whistles and shouts There was a guy with his sweetheart Ted came walkin' on past He could hear what was spoken He could hear what she asked She said, "Don't you envy the hero?" An' the fella answered his girl "Yes, he's the ultimate singer He's on top of the world" Singer man, do your work Sing your song, make it hurt Sing the tears, sing the pain Make it all so real |

The walls closin' around you and he won't be home tonight
He's out somewhere and gamblin' and perhaps he's in a fight And yes you know about the woman, and you know there's three or four Perhaps he's out there laughin' now and dancin' 'round the floor And yes you try to make the best of it, which isn't much I know You thought you've had your fill of it, you see that it wasn't so, oh No Now your babies are sleepin' soundly and you hang your head and think He damn near broke your nose last night and hardly does he drink And as the wind blows at the windows and the clouds go by the moon The walls closin' around you and your sadness still's around And yet you try to make the best of it, which isn't much I know You thought you've had your fill of it, but you see that it wasn't so, oh No, oh no You know you make your own decisions and you live the life you choose I watch it from the sidelines and it sure gives me the blues You know you're sure to find me waiting, should you ever come around I am the one who loves you while he drives you further down And yes you try to make the best of it, which isn't much I know You thought you've had your fill of it, but you see that it wasn't so, oh No, no babe |

Plane comes down on the old runway, home again for a week I'll stay
Hanging out like I used to do, hope to find some old friends I knew Hear the news in the honky tonk, who got married, yes, and who split up G Drinking beer while the jukebox plays, brand new songs for brand new days Quiet nights and empty streets, sleepy town, humble home Same old waltz in the wind, by the railroad track Riding out to a country bridge, moonlight shining across the ridge Frozen trees neath a billion stars, 7 friends jammed in Robby's car High as kites and wild and gone, drunk as well and laughing loud Back at home I say good night (Good night) and I close the door Sunday morning the church bell rings, the organ plays and the choir sings. Where am I while the preacher speaks? Dreaming dreams neath my sheets asleep Waking up and trying to think, what went down, what'd we do? I rub my eyes and I shake my head and feel the sun Plane takes off on the old runway, snow fell light on the ground today Lost an hour that I gained before, headed back to my New York door. fare thee well, adios, adieu and best of luck to all of you I ain't no saint and I don't pretend to be, but I hope you all found a G friend in me ity lights blink and shine, down below, let it change It's often said that life is strange, oh yes, but compared to what? |

Ba da ba da ba da ba da ba da ba da
Autumn this year is gonna break my heart Leaves start fallin and the feelin starts Days turn shorter and the nights turn cool And children walk home from school And children walk home from school Ba da ba da ba da Blue skys clearer when that old mill stream Flows cold water down a clean pipe dream Airs like apples in the mild day sun When summertimes race has run When summertimes race has run CHORUS It gets in your throat That melancholy mood Its bound to make you sadder But its good soul food Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh . . . Round moons yellow and its gold light glows Bare, black branches in a blind breeze blow Old folk fables tend to talk like wine And younger times haunt my mind Halloween comes and its the last sweet night Everything changes in the next days light One tough cricket sings his last lone song And wintertime comes on strong And wintertime comes on strong |

.Here's to all you all you lucky dogs, it's heads or tails.
Here's to all you filthy rich, I wish you well. Here's to all the pretty women made for cash. And here's to dashing daddy's son he's such a flash. Well, I been lookin' and walkin' 'round the sunset square, Singin' an' talkin' with my friends down there, sittin' an' lis'nin' with a young man's ear, to all the rainbow dreams Here's to all the shitty jobs that I despise. Here's to two-bit guarantees and other lies. Here's to roads of burning tar and hot cement. Here's to money in my hand and where it went. Well, I got my fingers a-tapping on the hard, stone steps. I'm waiting for lightning and the rains to fall. Young lovers are loafin' with their sidewalk smiles And all their rainbow dreams. Amy Alice in the Summer With a sack lunch and a punch card. See my sister with a drag job. Man, she feels like she's a hundred years ago. Here's to people living lives that they regret. Work your fingers to the bone and sink in debt. Here's to all those shaky tricks that hustlers try. You know their easy money is oft' times hard. They flash a grin an' they wink their eye, well... I been livin' an' breathin' in the rat trap town. Tryna get over where the wall breaks down. Holdin' my head up with my thin tired arms and all my rainbow dreams |

I was sittin' by the road, my head in a cloud,
Wishin' that I had some wings; Wishin' for a scooter, a-wishin' for a train Or any kin' o' movin' thing. Well, I looked at the trees, I looked at the sky, I seen it was a lovely day. I looked up the road, I looked at my feet, I picked it up an' walked away. Well, you cannot win if you do not play. No, you cannot win if you do not play. Well, I went to the fair, lookin' for fun. I think the whole world was there. I saw a fat man, I saw a thin man. I saw a little teddy bear. Well, I said to myself, "I know what I want. I gotta get a bear some way." I heard a loud voice. It said a few words. It said, "You gotta take a chance an' pay." Well, you cannot win if you do not play No, you cannot win if you do not play Pretty young Pam, you're bringin' me down baby, All ya do is make-uh me blue. I'm under the trees, I'm waiting alone, Tryna sing a song to you. Well, the night is so clear, the moon is so bright; You're wastin' it all away. You're up on a hill, I'm down here below. I'm tryna tell ya babe, it ain't okay. Well, you cannot win if you do not play. You cannot win if you do not play. |
