"여러 가지 샘플링을 구사해 독자적인 음악을 만들고 싶었다. 그렇지만 옛날에는 악기가 충분하지 않았기 때문에 오래된 샘플러를 빌려 쓰곤 했다. 우리는 뛰어난 연주기술을 가진 뮤지션도, 프로페셔널한 프로듀서도 아니었다. 하지만 아이디어와 정열은 그 누구에게도 지지 않았다." - 밴드 초기에 관한 인터뷰 中. 북유럽 누-재즈(Nu-Jazz)의 열풍을 범세계적으로 증폭시킨 이들이 바로 쿱(Koop)이다. 스웨덴어로는 ‘Co-Operation’을 의미한다고 한다. 재즈/라틴 성향의 트랙들을 주로 스핀했던 DJ 매그너스 진마크(Magnus Zingmark)와 클래식과 재즈 피아노 교육을 수료하고 재즈 퀸텟에서 연주하던 오스카 시몬슨(Oscar Simonsson)의 듀오로 결성됐다. 이들이 영향을 받았던 60년대 재즈와 30년대의 스윙을 바탕으로 교묘하게 짜여진 질감의 트렌디한 리듬을 도입하면서 수많은 청중들을 사로잡았다. 일렉트로닉 사운드 안에 재즈의 엣센스를 충분히 담아낸 세련되고 독자적인 방식은 이후 수많은 뮤지션들을 자극시켰으며 본국과 일본, 그리고 한국에서 여러 TV CM에 사용되면서 대중들에게 익숙해져 갔다. 1995년 영국의 클린 업(Clean Up), 그리고 1997년에는 컴포스트(Compost), 재자노바(Jazzanova)의 JCR에서 릴리즈 된 EP [Sons of Koop EP]를 시작으로 이들의 존재가 알려진다. 이 바닥에서 가장 영향력 있는 DJ 자일스 피터슨(Gilles Peterson)의 본격적인 푸시를 바탕으로 스웨덴의 여러 미디어와 DJ들의 연간 베스트에 줄곧 언급되면서 북유럽 출신의 넥스트 빅 씽이 될 것임을 예고한다. 2000년도에는 자일스 피터슨의 유명 컴필레이션 [Worldwide] 시리즈에도 이들의 곡이 수록되기도 했다. 후에는 재자노바의 리믹스 앨범 [The Remixes 1997-2000]에 [Absolute Space]를, 그리고 전통있는 컴필레이션 [Brazilectro: Latin Flavoured Club Tunes Session 4]에서 프랑스의 국민가수 앙리 살바도르(Henri Salvador)의 [Jazz Mediterrane]를 리믹스하면서 분주한 나날을 보낸다. "이 당시에는 '재즈'가 아닌 '재즈'가 여기저기 흘러 넘치고 있었고 나는 그 사실에 화가나 있었다. 그것들은 하우스, 소울, 펑크, 힙합이지 '재즈'는 아니었으니까. 단지 색소폰 솔로가 일부 있다는 이유만으로는 절대 재즈가 될 수 없다. 그래서 스윙 리듬을 직접 도입한 앨범을 만들려고 했다." - [Waltz For Koop]에 관한 인터뷰 中. 누-재즈, 클럽 재즈 붐을 만든 2002년도 걸작 [Waltz For Koop]은 2년 이상의 기간동안 작업이 진행됐다. 북유럽에서만 가능한 쿨하면서도 따뜻한 사운드, 그리고 재즈와 일렉트로-클럽튠이 적절하게 배치되어있는 주도면밀한 어레인지를 통해 전세계에 걸친 히트작이 됐다. 앨범 작업 당시 십대였던 리틀 드래곤(Little Dragon)의 유키미 나가노(Yukimi Nagano), 그리고 무려 전설의 이름인 테리 칼리아(Terry Callier)가 참여하기도 했다. 주로 여성 보컬리스트가 참가하면서 신비로운 어레인지를 통해 개성이 넘치는 사운드로 완성됐다. 이들은 항상 먼저 곡을 만든 이후에 보컬리스트를 찾기 시작한다고 밝혔다. 보컬리스트가 스튜디오에 오면 우선은 곡을 들려주고 자신들이 어떤 감정을 표현하고 싶은가에 대해 설명한다고 한다. 그리고 자신들이 납득할 때 까지 레코딩을 반복하는데 자신들의 노래는 매우 짧고 단순하기 때문에 대체로는 1시간 이내에 보컬 레코딩이 마무리 된다고 한다. 아무튼 [Waltz For Koop]은 확실히 크로스 오버 뮤직 씬에서 '북유럽'이라는 존재를 결정지은 한 장이었다. 2003년도에 발매된 [Waltz For Koop - Alternative Takes]는 이들의 여러 리믹스 트랙들을 한데 모으면서 또 한번 화제를 불러일으켰다. 이들의 곡들이 본격적인 댄스 플로어용으로 재탄생 되면서 더욱 다양한 팬층을 사로잡았다. 2004년도에는 아스트로 삐아졸라(Astor Piazzolla)의 리믹스 앨범 [Remixed]에서 [Vuelvo Al Sur]를, 그리고 [Verve Remixed 2]에서는 아스트럿 질베르또(Astrud Gilberto)의 [Here's That Rainy Day]를 리믹스하면서 점점 메인스트림한 작업을 전개한다.
