INTRODUCTION
Xiu Xiu (슈슈)는 2000년경 캘리포니아 산 호세에서 보컬리스트이자 기타리스트인 Jamie Stewart를 주축으로 4인조로 결성되었다. 1998년 작 중국 영화 [Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl]라는 영화 제목에서 밴드명을 따온 아트 팝 밴드라고 할 수 있다. 2002년 데뷔앨범 [Knife Play]라는 발표하기 전부터 Deer hoof (디어후프)와 스플릿 싱글을 내놓는 등 일찍부터 씬에서 주목을 받아왔다. 특정 장르로 규정할 수 없는 이들의 사운드는 리더 Jamie Stewart 특유의 어둡고 근원적인 우울함을 원천으로 한 인디락 사운드를 기본으로 격렬하고 혼재된 일렉트로닉 사운드를 들려주고 있다. 현재 Jamie Stewart를 제외한 3명의 초창기멤버는 교체되었고, 한국계 Angela Seo (서현혜)와 Sam Mickens, Zac Pennington 등 4인조로 활동하고 있으며, 2010년 5월 롤링홀에 2인조로 내한한 바 있다. ....  .... 작년 미국 인디 씬에서 쏟아져 나온 무수한 작품들 중 슈 슈가 발표했던 [Knife Play]와 [Chapel of The Chimes]는 두드러질 만큼 독특한 냄새를 가지고 있었다. 너무나 독특해서 어지간해선 단박에 친해질 수가 없는 종류이기도 했다. 이 낯가리는 독특성은 암울하디 암울한 어두움에다 시퍼렇게 날이 서 번뜩이는 공격성, 어딘지도 모르고 달려가는 방향 없는 역동성의 삼박자를 고루 갖추고 있었다. 그러나 수줍음은 아니었으며 접근을 자기 쪽에서 거부하는, 자기 혼자 세상 전부를 따돌림 시켜버리는 지독한 확고함을 가진 '접근금지'형 낯가림이었다.음악을 만드는 이가 듣는 이를 보듬어 함께 갈 생각을 하지 않는다면? 어둡고 음험한 감정의 구렁텅이에 밀어 떨어 트려놓곤 자기는 또 어딘가로 횡 하니 사라진...
