INTRODUCTION반젤리스는 1960년대부터 유명한 포밍스(Formynx)와 아프로디테스 차일드(Aphrodite's Child)와 함께 활동하여 앨범 〈666〉을 발표하였고, 사이키델릭 클래식으로 인식되었다. 1970년에는 '예스(Yes)' 밴드의 리드 보컬 존 앤더슨(Jon Anderson)과 협력하여 '존 앤 반젤리스'(Jon & Vangelis)의 이름으로 7개의 앨범을 발표하였다. 1970년대 후반에는 여러 편의 동물에 대한 다큐멘터리의 음악을 작곡하였다. 이로 인해 영화 제작자의 주목을 받게 되고, 1981년에는 〈불의 전차〉의 주제곡으로 빌보드 차트의 정상 자리를 차지함과 함께 아카데미상을 수상하였다.
