Aquibird 아키버드는 2006년, 보컬리스트 레이디제인(Lady Jane)과 프로듀서 DJ 매직쿨제이(Magik Cool J)의 듀오로 결성, 1집 를 발표하며 활동을 시작했다. 발랄한 보컬 음색과 일렉트로니카, 레게, 하우스 등을 세련되게 풀어낸 모던 록넘버로 호응을 얻으며 <커피프린스>, <소울메이트> 등 드라마 OST와 광고 음악으로도 만날 수 있었다. 이후 1.5집 와 EP < No One Else >, <불꽃놀이>, <일어났어?>를 꾸준히 발매하며 활동을 계속한다. 2009년 보컬 레이디제인의 탈퇴 후 아키버드의 세션과 싱어송라이터로 활동 중인 정우와 애시드 밴드 모노 투 스테레오(Mono to Stereo)의 객원 보컬리스트인 유연이 영입되었다. 그들은 새로운 3인조 아키버드의 시작을 알리며 2010년 10월 4번째 EP <싱숭생숭>을 발매했다. 셀프 커버 컨셉으로 출발한 <싱숭생숭>은 아키버드만의 정서를 간직하며 밀도 있는 편곡과 연주, 보다 서정적인 음색을 통해 새로운 아키버드식의 팝 스타일을 구축했다. .... ....

2006년말 1집 이후 1년 반만에 나온 아키버드의 2집 [Whose Dream]는 한국의 일렉트로니카 음악들 모두가 천편일률적인 관성의 늪에 빠져 있는 것이 아님을 증거한다. 모두 8곡이 담긴 이 앨범에서 아키버드는 어쿠스틱한 감성을 기반으로 재즈와 퓨전등의 다양한 장르를 적절하게 버무려 일렉트로니카스럽지 않은 일렉트로니카 음악을 빚어내는데 성공했다. 새로운 진화를 이뤄냈다고는 말할 수 없지만 숨통을 열어놓는 작은 여유를 만들었다고는 말해도 좋을 것이다.

즐겨 찾는 재즈 클럽에서 종종 그런 경험을 하곤 한다. 브라스와 기타의 선율이 너울대고 피아노의 화려한 독주가 끝나면 대개의 경우 어김없이 드럼 솔로가 양념같이 뒤따른다. 그런데 돌이켜보면 나는 드러머의 솔로 파트가, 스네어와 탐을 더블 스트록으로 두드리는 과격한 필인(Fill-in)에서, 하이햇을 띄엄띄엄 건드리는 8비트라든지 16비트라든지의 패턴으로 슬며시 떠오를 때, 비로소 막힌 숨을 토해내듯 그렇게 열광한 것 같다. 관객들의 환호 또한 대체로 그 즈음에 터져 나온다. 말인즉슨 주체하기 힘든 흥이나 격식을 잠시 떠난 창조적인 솔로 플레이도, 결국 일정한 패턴을 놓치지 않는 익숙함이 보장된 상태에서만 ‘즐기는’ 것이 가능하고 그루브가 되는 것이 아닐까 하는 생각이다. 사실 그루브라는 말의 사전적 정의 가...
